    Trolling....you're doing it wrong.

Why? Do you think a good will message is trolling.

Four days of coverage for an old biddy wandering around the place. You could have a drinking game for everytime the words "historic" and "maturity" are used but you would be dead in a half an hour.

Mary Mac will probably do the "building bridges" guff until she is blue in the face..

Prisoners threw away their prison uniforms and wore a blanket, part of the protests against criminalization which culminated in the hungerstrikes.

When prisoners where on protest(smash up everything in the cell, all they had was a mattress and a blanket, walls smeared in excrement, refuse to wash or shave, absolute hell it sounded like) they where said to be "on the blanket".

This afternoon one of my students said to me "I'm going on the blanket tomorrow". I stopped, stunned: what age are you? 16.

"The blanket" - how many people reading this even know what that was? Amazing. I have never, ever, ever seen so many "Shinners" among the kids in all the classes. I tried, in vain, to teach them that it's easy to call yourself Irish but it's a lot harder to put the work into being Irish by learning Irish, learning a traditional instrument, playing Irish games or the like (an argument in fairness which would piss off the average lazy-arsed "Oirish" adult, too). In particular I asked the guys what's the point in hating the Queen of England if you're going to follow British soccer teams and loads of other things in their culture and reject Irish culture? Is this what Irish freedom is meant to be about? The brighter kids (of which there are few) got it; the rest settled on "she murdered all those people on Bloody Sunday", "Celtic's an Irish team", and its many variants. This morning one of the kids started first class by telling everybody that Meteor's network is being shut down for this visit - many if not most of the kids have Meteor - and this spread around the school like wildfire.

Disturbing. This visit can only end in tears if people waving the British flag are going to be allowed on the streets. Common sense should dictate that this visit will be discreet, polite and just like any other visit by a head of state. People trying to make it otherwise for their own political agenda do not have Ireland's interests at heart. Since Ireland has invited her, Queen Elizabeth II of England deserves to be welcomed like any other head of state, but not treated better than them. When politeness and protocol give way to an inferiority complex, this is when the problems start.

you are not happy she is visiting then.

You were telling a story about it! It even included the line ""The blanket" - how many people reading this even know what that was?" You could have easily explained it, no need to get sarky.

so what does going on the blanket mean? are they going to wear blankets into school??
as for keeping it low key like every other state visit, does that mean that the thousands that turned out to see bill clinton in college green years ago should've stayed at home?

I think the OP left it out deliberately to get this reaction.

and to tell us how to use google

Couple of houses in our estate have tri-colors tied on to their roofs to presumably remind the queen that she's in Ireland when she looks out the window of her plane. These are the same people who woke half the estate up in the early hours of Sunday morning drunkenly celebrating Manchester United's league win like Dublin had just won the all Ireland!

Mohammed Al Fayed has paid me to dress up in an E.T. outfit outside Dublin Castle with a sign on my head saying "TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT DIANA". Have to sing her a little song on the guitar too.....

Dionysus, Bobby Sands was an Aston Villa fan and proud of it. Most other men "on the blanket" supported a PL team. If they can Im pretty sure I can support Man Utd.

I hate GAA. I cant play any instrument. My Irish is pretty bad.(in fact many volunteers only learnt Irish in jail, Dessie Ellis ran a gaeltacht on the republican wing in Portlaoise)

If one does not satisfy the above criteria are they, in your book, not Irish?

It's a stupid (and very expensive) idea, thought of by people far removed from the reality, and supported by similar people.

If you really think a headline like "British queen's visit passes off peacefully" will get as many potential tourists as "British queen's visit sparks riots" will lose potential tourists then you're misguided.

There's no rational, economic sense to this visit.

And how would you teach a load of raheads about the British queen's visit when they're dead set against it, and would you allow your own point of view into the equation?

"Value-free" history does not exist beyond the delusions of a tiny minority of the historians in academia.

Alternatively, you could get over the fact that not everybody agrees with your evident enthusiasm for this British royal visit. In fact, yours is firmly a minority position. The more disruptions to daily life in Dublin, the more of a minority your view becomes - or have you your head in the sand about this reality too?
