Basically I work for myself and while business is going ok, I am considering applying for a part time position in a company. However, the hours that they require me will dictate whether or not I can even do the job (as I will continue in my current job aswell).

It says who to send the application into (the company directly, not a recruitment agency). do you think its ok to phone them up just for a chat to see what the hours are. Its a waste of everybodys time if I get an interview (given my experience I would imagine so) and then it works out that the hours dont even suit.

Would this be considered a "no no" in even before applying for a job ?

On the contrary - it shows initiative to ring up and enquire. Don't just ring up and ask about hours though- you need to be asking about the role, what it entails, etc. Basically show that you are interested enough in the job that you've already gone and researched a bit about it and the company you hope to be working for.

You need to be careful you don't give the impression you are canvassing.
