What a fantastic day for a run. Just went out and let the legs dictate the pace today. Nice handy 4 miles. Any time I did check the watch I was alittle surprised at the pace, I was going a bit faster than it felt for the effort.

This was anew 10K on the calendar this year and as it was local I though I may as well give it a go. Very nearly didnt make the start line though. Forgot my age on Friday and was messing about with the kids on the trampoline, cue nasty bruised heel and no running at all over the weekend. Will I ever start to act my age?

Anyway heel was fine this morning so headed down and was impressed overall with the organistation and overall setup from registration right through to the after race food.

Once the race got going I settled into a quick enpugh pace for th efirst K just to test the legs out. Realised after a mile though that if I was to get around I would have to drop it off a bit. I was finding it pretty tough up to the half way point but I wasn't losing any ground on thise around me so guess it wasnt just me. Through half way in 22:30 and actually started to feel a bit better for the next couple of K. Once I hit the 7K mark though it really started to hurt but by this poin there was a group of 5 of us running pretty much together and I was determined not to fall off the back. The last 3K seemed to go on forever though. Once I hit the 9K mark I tried to pick the pace up a bit and surprisingly my legs actually responded. Could se the finish line from around 400 out so just tried to keep going and hold on crossed the line in 44:31.
Got to say delighted with the result with nearly 2 1/2 mins taken off that miserable soft PB from January especially with a marathon still in my legs a bit from a couple of weeks back.

Great 10k time there brokenman , especially to negatively split the race (I'm nearly always slower in the 2nd half of races). Do you think the endurance you've gotten from marathon training enabled you to pick the pace up over the final few k's even though your legs were heavy going into the race ?

Couple of things probably contributed mainly that the first half was net uphill and the second half net downhill, not by a lot but every little helps. Distance training for marathons definitely helps on the shorter distances alright, but personally I find 10K to be the hardest distance, you are nearly running at your 5K pace but its for twice as long.
Biggest thing that lead to the neg split today though was down to someone esle, just after 5K one of my clubmates and training partners came up on my shoulder and we definitely worked together to get through the last 5K. It makes a huge difference if you have someone to pace off, particularly if its someone you know.

Lovely relaxed 4 miles at lunch. Legs were a bit heavy from yesterday so stopped after 2 for a good stretch. Time to make a decision soon though on what Im going to target next. Its either going to be Portumna 50K leading into a shortened 12 week marathon specific programme or else just working on some speed and then into an 18 week marathon programme. Though nowing my love of speed training the 50K is looking more likely now.

Tough run this evening. Was out with a sub 3 and 2 sub 3:15 marathoners. Nice easy run for then but nearly had me in bits. Happy that I was able to stay the pace thpugh, especially as the legs were still a bit heavy from Monday. Think 'm gonna have to build some of the marathon training later around these Wednesday runs.

Through 500 miles for the year as well :D

Well done on the pb. Fantastic improvements this year BrokenMan. Straight into the 5k series next week?

Plan on doing the 5K alright, not sure if I will be running next week or not yet. Local leg so might wind up helping out.

Reaquainted myself with the whole idea of Recovery Runs this morning. Have been running my easy days too quick lately and its a sure way to an injury. Really had to concentrate on keeping the pace down around the 9 min miles though, it felt harder to do that than run faster.

Got a few things on over the weekend so figured I woul dhead straight out from work for my long run. First attempt at one since COnnemara and it really was a struggle. Just couldn't get into it at all right from the off. Felt tired and sluggish from the start and my pace just kept dropping off mile on mile. Didn't have any gels with me which probably didnt help later on but it doesnt explain the bad start.

Hopefully just one of those days. Noticed I was missing some mile from the monthly total as well, didnt putin Mondays miles. Corrected it here.

Well done on the long run yesterday. It can't be easy heading out for that kind of mileage straight after work. I wonder would the humidity have been a factor in your feeling sluggish ? Even though the temperature hasn't been that high the past week I though the evenings have been humid enough , certainly very nice for a short run but I'd say tough work for a 15 miler !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,706 ✭✭✭BrokenMan

Don't think it was the humidity, there was a nice fresh breeze when I was out, and I wasn't feelin great pretty much from the off. Think its just going down as 'one of thise days'. We all get them from time to time it's just not nice when they turn up on a long run.

Yesterday morning a bit of a strange run. Was taking it nice and handy and the calves felt really tight and sore again. Was kinda hoping that had passed again. Stopped after 2 miles for a good stretch and picked my pace up after that and it seemed to help. It almost feels like when I run slow I run worse
    Finished feeling OK again.

Im really getting fed up of this wind though.

Didn't run the first of the 5K series last night. Was helping out with parking and marshalling. Definitely a real eye opener into what goes on behind the scenes on race day just to get everything organised and ensure things go off smoothly. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who can to help out at a local race.

6 miles at lunch time in pretty horrible weather, windy, squallly showers. Pace was all over the place depending on the direction I was going in. Felt that I was puttign in a lot more effort than the pace suggested. Left knee is acting up a bit again as well nothing major just doesnt feel totally right.

No run yesterday, the knee just didn't feel right and was sore walking up stairs. Decided that it was best to just rest it.
Today a nice handy 4 miles just to check everything was workign ok. Still feel a little bit in the knee but its definitely improved. No idea what I did to it though.

Next week wont be getting alot of miles in between one thing and another so should work out well as a bit of a rest.

Nothing at all over the weekend, decided a few days total rest was in order. Headed to Tuam last night with no real idea of what would happen. Had been busy at work and didnt have any plan heading into the race. Decided to go out quick and just see what happened. After the first 2K I just didne feel right, had a pain under the front of my ribcage, not really a stitch nut it was definitely hampering my breathing. Had a few people giving me funny looks with the noises I was making. Lost time on K 3 and 4 but managed to drag something out in the last K to finish reasonabley strongly in 21:03, would have been nice to dip under the 21 but hopefully next time with a bit of luck.

Happy enough with how it went I suppose, can never look down on a PB even if it could have been better. Knee didnt give me any trouble at all.

Well done on the PB in the 5k. I think the weather for the past week doesn't make for fast racing, it's like we are straight back into winter after a nice April. The pain under the ribcage sounds like a touch of heartburn , not a hell of a lot of difference between that & a stitch really when you are trying to go flat out. You did well to pick it up in the last k, in every 5k I've done the last k was the slowest. If you get a race on a nice evening & don't get any stitch like episodes you'll cruise in under 21 mins :)

did I forget to mention the last K was downhill :D

The pain felt more like my lungs going into spasm than heartburn, my bodys way of telling myself to cop the hell on and stop running up with the fast guys early on. Was talking to one of the lads who was just behind me for a while and he reckoned I sounded like an asthmatic donkey.

Hopefully though I can get under 21 in Craughwell or Dangan dont think its possible in Claregalway or Loughrea.

Been away with work since Wednesday and got absolutely no running in until today. Felt grand during the run but since then my knee has been pretty sore and stiff. Strange as it had been feeling grand all week. Its starting to worry me now and its definitely time to pay a visit to the physio to see whats happening. Its just been going on a little too ling at this stage. Strangest thing is though that it doesnt seem to hurt when I am actually running.

After another 2 days off to rest the old arthritic knee I headed to Craughwell last night without any real idea of how I would go. Thats getting pretty typical for me now. After last weeks misadventures thought I would go out a little slower though and see how I felt, somehow I was faster over the first K though than last week, second K was a nice easy one but then the next 2 were more or less uphill and the pace did drop off, not sure if it was the hills or more likely just a drop in concentration. Was able to have a good last K as well again though

Comparing splits I was faster last night on 4 of the 5 K's but lost it all in the second.

Good news was no stitch/cramp/spasm or whatever the hell it was. Bad news was a slightly slower time though. Personally I do find the Craughwell run slightly more difficult than Tuam though.

Gentle 4 mile at lunch time today. First time in nearly 2 weeks that I have managed to put in back to back days. Felt a little stiff from last night but thats to be expected. Apart from that nothing major to report. Knee held up fine, just a little twinge.

Am going to try and get some focus back into my training again, Protumna is off the sards at this stage just not enough time to get up to distance and down want to risk breaking down. Am thinking of following a 10K plan to try and build up a bit of speed endurance which will hopefully stand to me come DCM training time.

Didn't enjoy todays run at all. My kegs were tired and sore and I just wasn't feeling in the mood for it. Wind in my face all the way out didn't help, have I mentioned I hate the wind. Only good thing is that its done and out of the way now.

Now thats my moaning out of the way

Went for a run today at lunch myself, there is an awfully stiff breeze out there. Even with the sun shining its very un-May like ! Even though I've a poor months mielage I think I might have a bigger total for May than you . Still I'd love to have the yearly total you have :)

This is traditionally one of the harder of the 5K series races but this year the course was reversed. this meant a steepish hill right at the start but the worst hill other years was now downhill.
Again with just a 10 mile bike ride on Sunday in the tank since Saturday I wasn't really sure where I was here. Legs were pretty stiff and sore and just wasn't really feeling the love for it. Decided to just go out nice and easy and get the race done. First K being uphill certainly helped with that and afterwards I settled into a nice comfortable pace, took th ehill at 4K handy. Kicked on for the last K again and finished feeling pretty comfortable and a lot better than I had at the start. Slowest run so far this year (21:34) but I pretty much knew that before I started :)
