Dunno if I've ever bought something there, although maybe once, so not too much!

    Tis no Quinnsworth.

It's gonna get sold to one of the UK retailers eventually. Its fate was sealed when Quinn sold it. The current guys don't want it and never did. They just bought it cause they thought they could make a quick buck on the property. Now they are stuck with it unless they want to sell it for 1/4 of what they paid for it.

Who could forget Crazy Prices. In the days of loss leaders, you could get beans and peas in Crazy prices for about 6p and a loaf of bread for 8p, no joking.

In Tallaght on entrance, you were greeted by a massive cutout of Maurice Pratt's face (I think) with the slogan 'sure the prices are only crazy'. Crazy they were but an unbelievably depressing place with shelves stacked about 12 feet high and isles so narrow you would struggle to navigate through other shoppers.

The self service tills are the the best, they make the next in line wait until you have finished your transaction, unlike Tesco when people put their basket beside you when you are still packing.

Superquinn's bread, fish, fruit and meat are by far the best of any supermarket

You pay a little more but if you arn't on a really tight budget, it's well worth it

I live right beside one so I'd really miss it if it went

Haha no way!! When/why did it close?

Did people get too snobby to buy their food in a warehouse?

I'm hoping John Lewis buy it because then we'll get Waitrose, which is way better.

id love a waitrose over here!

my folks used to shop there - theyd go to crazy prices mostly and then the odd week theyd go to superquinn as they did nice bread. but the place changed a lot - too fancy and the prices reflect it. so they dont go now though im sure the bread is still good!

if however - superquinn wont be replaced by something else (and not friggin tesco) then itd be a shame. the market needs to stay a bit competitive

No their annual sales are in the €500m area. Profit is likely to be a big negative number when the cost of servicing that debt is included.

I would miss it if it were to close. Maybe they need to get RTE's Retail Therapy in...

They have made a bit on the property. Bearing in mind that when they bought it the property value alone was nearly the price they paid for the entire group. Purchase price was approx €450 million. They have sold four of the shops and leased them back for approx €140 million. They don't own all the rest but even with property prices dropping I think they still will end up making money in the long term.

Had to check their store locator to see where the nearest one was. I think I have a different definition of "all over Ireland" than they do.

i unashamedly love superquinn. yep, it's posh but the food is great and it's a 5 minute walk from my flat. if you're buying mostly fresh food it's really not that expensive. not aldi cheap obviously but far better quality than dunnes and a massive improvement on our not-so-local tesco where veg manages to rot between the time you stick it in a basket and get it home. the staff in our one are lovely and i've managed to convince them to stock a couple of things so hope they don't close :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,560 ✭✭✭✭road_high

They do very good half price and euro offers on very good products on a weekly basis..if you shop wisely in Superquinn I find it very good value for the quality you get. That's what I do, I buy fresh food there and some offers and other essentials in Lidl etc... I would really miss them and hope if they're taken over retain their current format and range.

    Superquinn is great.

They do good food, decent ranges and prices to suit all levels of income. They're own brand stuff is great, whether it's the cheaper or more expensive products.

Regarding the likes of Tesco, while I'd assume Superquinn aren't squeaky clean, they don't engage in as many dodgy practices as Tesco do.

Yep, I remember the one in Ballyfermot, think it was Quinnsworth before that and is now a Tesco, dunno if Mary Byrne worked in it during it's Crazy Prices hayday though :)

Edit to add: I'm sure some here will remember yellow pack, but does anyone remember KVI? I think it was Crazy Prices' version of yellow pack.

Always a Superquinn fan myself. Always found it just a much more pleasant shopping experience compared to the local tesco, because of the quality of the food, quality of the staff, intelligence of other customers, just everything really. M&S are decent enough but it's actually hard to find normal food that's not soaked in butter or other various heart attack inducing condiments. As such, I don't really consider M&S as somewhere that you can do a normal weekly shop.

LIDL/ALDI are fine, but again you can't get everything you need.

At a guess.. your negative equity is about paid 350,000+ and worth 125,000 now.

I just find Tesco so bland and unappealing in comparison. No disrespect and know this will sound/is racist but I like the fact Superquinn staff are generally Irish as well. They do very good frozen food offers, stuff is always on half-price. Thye have a turnover of 0.5 Billion vs 80 Billion worldwide for Tesco so I think they do a great job in a David and Goliath battle. Tesco not even that cheap on so many things, it's just they stock a huge range.
