Waxing at home

    Hey,

Has anyone here ever used home waxing kit from Argos?

    Rio Total Body Hair Waxing

I have no real experience with waxing (and I would only do my legs/underarms).

In the past I did use the Veet warm wax jar but didn't find it to be much good.

Am I crazy to even consider waxing my own legs/arms considering I have to training/experience in that area?

I've moved your post from the Off-Topic thread to its own thread. You'll get more answers this way.

    You're mad!

DO NOT wax at home alone unless you know what you're doing and as you said, you dont. Legs, I wouldnt worry as much about but under arm skin and bikini line skin is way more thin and sensitive.

These days you can find good enough deals in salons. Go to a professional, it'll be worth it OR you could be a model/guinea pig for beauticians during their practical exams (check colleges) but id prefer the professional.

    Good luck.

I would not . I was reading about waxing on the internet and it can cause ingrown hairs , the hairs can start growing again underneath skin and its an awful thing to happen and very difficult to sort out .

If you don't know what you're doing you'll bruise your skin...trust me its painful!

At nearly €54 your definitely mad!! I wax my legs at home using sugar wax, at a cost of maybe €2 in total, you can make a batch in 15 minutes, it keeps for months because all thats in it is sugar, water and lemon juice and it can be used hot or cold. I've never gotten ingrown hairs, and its relatively pain free.

Thanks guys, I won't get it so, I don't want to risk injuring myself.

Just to clarify though, I wouldn't even attempt the bikini area, I would just do the legs and underarms.

Can you post the method/ingredients for this please? I'd give it a try.

Change of plans, we're going to the 11:45 show!! :pac:
No pictires of my own to upload becuase the laptop won't recognise the SD card grrrrr.....
    Anyway, its very simple

    2 cups of water
    3 cups of sugar
    2 teaspoons lemon juice(fresh squeezed or from a bottle-doesn't make a difference)

Put all three in a saucepan and bring to a boil. When the colour changes to golden brown lower the temperature and simmer until it turns dark brown. At this stage take a teaspoon and run under cold water, if it hardens and becomes pliable its ready. Pour into a sealable pot or dish. If it doesn't harden leave it to simmer for a few minutes more and test again. It'll take about 15-20 minutes in all.

When it cools down it will look like this, similar colour to strong tea. You can use it hot or cold. Heat it in the microwave until its runny and use it in the same way as regular wax, use strips of heavy cotton or denim as they will stick to the wax better.

Personally I use it cold, take a lump fro the cold wax and knead it in your fingers, like taffy. It will change colour, become more golden and shiny, once its really soft and slightly sticky its ready to use. You need to dust your skin with babypowder, just a little. Start down at your ankle and smear the wax up your leg, against the direction of hair growth. I know this sounds really odd, but you actually grab hold of more hair this way and its far less painfull. pull the wax away from your skin in a downwards motion. The best thing about using it cold is you can go over the same spot again and again if you need to. You can also target individual hairs.

I'm not going to lie, the techique needs to be practised until you get used to it, but I find it far easier now than other wax's. When I was looking into it first I watched a lot of tutorials on YouTube, Redfootwalking's tutorials were the best IMO she takes you through each stage in a few different videos and is pretty thorough. There is another girl Amy11190 who shows the correct way to apply the sugar wax, but her wax is more of a paste and terribly messy, I prefer to use it when its more solid-less mess and stickiness.

Best thing about sugar wax is that it washes off in water, smells really pleasant and can be reused if you want to(yuck!) And if you boil it too long and it goes hard, you can eat it as its basically a sweet your making! I've noticed my skin is very soft afterwards, and as I said I have had no ingrown hairs as i wax in the natural growth direction of the hair.

Have a look on Youtube, there are loads of tutorials on how to make it and how to use it, lots of them are pushing for sales of their own product of course but you can pick up the methods from their vidoes too. Feel free to ask if you have any questions, I'm here to help!!

Doesn't really matter about the water, first time i made it i used hot water from the kettle, second time i used tap water-both took the same amount of time to make the wax :p

Heading out now-rain is bucketing down! (also the film is in 3D and i've just realised i need to put my contacts in lol)

I tried this tonight and the wax still isn't brown. It's been on the cooker since about 10.10pm.

    Here's a picture I took about 5 minutes ago.

    1.jpg

And when I took a spoonful and put it until the cold water, it didn't harden.

I have it simmering now and it still isn't brown, light or dark.

You gotta get it to a really rollicking boil before it will chane colour, and then reduce to a simmer.
Be so so so careful with this, hot sugar caramel gives an awful burn!!

I had it on the cooker for over an hour and there was still no change of colour.

I'll let it go cold before I use it though, to avoid any possible burns!

Which ring do you have the pot over? I found it was easiest to make it over the largest ring, and using a fairly large pot, that way it heated fairly quickly and the sides of the pot were high enough to prevent it boiling right up. Eviledna's right, it really needs to boil hard until the colour changes, only turn the heat down then.

I had it on the biggest ring (both rings are the same size) and in a medium pot (bigger pots were being used by others).

Will try it again at the weekend and report back here.

    Thanks for your help :)

On youtube it gives the recipe:

    2 cups sugar
    1/4 cup water
    1/4 cup lemon juice.

    Another says one cup sugar.

Awfully confusing, but ill give it a go!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,842 ✭✭✭shinikins

Geansai Rua, is that for a sugar wax that you heat, or for cold waxing? It sounds like it would end up being a really hard wax, that you'd have to heat before you use, so maybe its just for strip waxing.

The recipe I use is ideal for cold waxing as its fairly solid at room temperature but you can still dig some out with your fingers. Once you work/knead it it becomes more pliable. It can still be heated to use with strips if thats preferred.
