I hear that Garret Fitzgerald is gravely ill in hospital. I learned this on BBC this morning. It's funny how our national broadcaster did not mention it this morning and to my knowledge they still have nothing up on their news site about him.

What does this say about RTE???

That somebody being sick is not news?

It's a private matter. If he died, fair enough, but really what purpose does it serve to tell the country that Dr. Fitzgerald is sick?

Garret Fitzgerald. And yes you are right I thought you must have missed it. Not a sausage which is poor form, if Bertie Ahern were hanging on to dear life I'd pull the plug expect coverage.

Not sure 'bout RTE but you got his name wrong.

Hope Garret pulls through, great man.

That since Tommie Gorman's faux pas some years ago - reporting David Ervine as 'dead' before he was - they are reluctant to rush with reports about such issues?

He was a public figure and an ex Taoiseach I think it's very important! They were very quick to report on Jedward breaking a leg before a gig, but an ex-Taoiseach gravely ill is not something of importance?

Actually I heard it on 2FM News at this morning 7.30. The only reason it registered with me is because they left out a reason. He's gravely ill in intensive care in hospital...... I though he was in a car crash or something.

No mention of it on RTE website either. Today FM have been reporting on it since yesterday evening, and would imagine the newspapers will all carry the story today.

RTE do have a piece up on their news page abut Jonathan Rhys-Myers going into Rehab! Now that's news!

I know, I seen it last night on FB (one of the political pages I like), and I looked all over the RTE site and seen nothing! It's of importance he is a former taoiseach (whether people liked him or not), and it should be on the national broadcasters website at the very least.

I hope he's okay. All the best wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

He's a Good Man and we were lucky to have him.

I wish him a speedy recovery he seemed to be a man of ethics unlike a lot of the current crop. He also played an important part of the anglo Irish agreement regarding the north.

I agree. He might not of gotten everything right, but he didn't do half bad! As far as politicians go, he has always struck me as an honourable man. That's just my opinion of course, but I do think that when we're all dead and gone history will reflect well on him!

I'm fairly sure I heard about this on the 2fm news last night

Yup, I think he was a perfect example of how an intelligent, ethical and fundamentally good person gets completely buggered by the system.

The alternative at the time was haughey... omg.

Well he wasn't in Haughey's league but Sir Garret didn't mind appointees of his to AIB dropping his debts of €200,000 . Regadless, the fella was a total waffler and West Brit. As it was said, if Thatcher blew her nose Sir Garret would apologise and clean it up for her. Wouldn't be missed.

serious question - what's a west brit in your book? is it a description of an accent/"class" or a political description.

It's a catchall phrase designed to cover anyone who's not from down the country. Generally spouted by people of lower intelligence to make themselves feel politically adept.

Why must every thread on After Hours descend into bulls**t like this? Do you have to be a special breed of idiot or something?

    I hope the guy recovers.
