What's the worst part of London?

Just watched Harry Brown and have spent the last few days going around saying:

"Ya feel me, blood? Ya feel me? Aiii"
"Boyakasha, on de roads ya need ta be tooled up ya know wot a meen, innit bruv? This is reel 5hit. This is how we roll. Westside..."

etc...

So just wondering where to go to become Ali G?

Ali G hails from Staines, Middlesex.
Slough is in Berkshire.
Neither is in London.

I worked in London for a summer once and I must say I didn't see a whole lot of London but out of the places I saw Lewisham scared the sh!te out of me...a lot people who were living there where on or below the poverty line, also judging by the size of the police station (about 4 times of Henry Street Station in Limerick), would suggest crime rates were high.

You seriously just walked around the place spouting that **** and didn't get punched in the face?...

I've lived in some pretty ropey areas of London (Brixton and Peckham) and worked in Slough for a while (including shift work, so I'd occasionally have to come home at 11-12), but never felt as threatened as I have been when in certain areas of Limerick!

Staines is actually in Surrey, I think they're trying to change the name of the town to disassociate themselves with Ali G.

As for the question in the OP, anything east is usually pretty bad. Lots of gangs, huge crime rate. Lewisham, Bermondsey and Stratford are pretty awful. Although Stratford is where the Olympics is going to be, so it might improve the place.

I managed pubs in some of the worst spots in Lahndan. Brixton is dangerous if you don't have your wits about you, Tower Hamlets is pretty grim. The Aylesbury Estate in Walworth may win the prize though, it's not known as skag city for nothing. It's only one estate, but so big it's an area all of it's own.

Slough, as pointed out earlier, is in Berkshire, not London. I lived in it for about 4 years and it's just a bit of a kip, not really rough for the most part and you can walk to some lovely places around Windsor in 20 mins.

Croydon, Slough etc aren't really London as pointed out and are just dumps as opposed to actually scary places;

Some of the estates in SE London are scary & Stonebridge Park Estate used to be a real sh!thole, full of Yardies & wannabe Yardies but I did hear they were cleaning it up.
Most of the council estates in East London are rough too, I worked with some blokes who wouldn't let me come their flat, "not safe for a white dude" apparently.

Am based in West London when I am there and it is lovely. Roughest place in London I ever visited is Bermondsey. However, I have visited some depressing spots elsewhere in England. Middlesbrough, Liverpool (L4) and Wigan were a real throw back in time.

i have never had a problem,every city has its scumbags,but as long you are friendly you will be OK,smile and dont look scared, but as a earlier postie said,go north young man the natives are not to bad

Lewisham is statistically the place you're most likely to get stabbed.

Personally, I lived in various parts of London for 15 years and as big cities go, its not that bad (I suffered one burglary, because my housemate was an idiot who left the front door open, and two attempted robberies, once from a pickpocket on the tube, who got a slap for his trouble, and once from a bunch of hoodies on bikes, who didn't get anything either), but its not a case of rough bits are dangerous and posh bits are safe; you can as easily get mugged in Knightsbridge as Brixton.

The run down bits and the concrete jungles like Croydon and Hackney are more depressing than dangerous, and even then there are worse outside London; Bracknell, Basildon, Luton, place like that, are all feckin horrible.

I had a mate from Leytonstone - a real born and bred East End type - and the only place in London he was scared to go was Canning Town. I'm not sure if he's ever been to Walworth though and I've got no intention of going there either, so probably one of those 2. I think south Peckham deserves a mention too.

Croydon's ugly and chavvy but not generally in the same league as these places.

Brixton's not bad at all these days, apart from all the hipsters.

Stratford's an unpleasant breeding grounds for fried chicken shops and loud, rude, fat people but definitely not the worst.

Streatham, meh, I've wandered into it by mistake before. Depressing place, but felt safe enough in daylight.

Unless you were frequenting Southhill, St Mary's or Weston then that's absolute shite you're talking. You'd have no reason to go into those areas unless [a] You had relatives there or You were looking for gear/yokes/whatever. A positive answer to either one of those means you should know what to expect.

The violence in Limerick is all localised for the most part, the stab city thing is a comfortable myth perpetuated by the media when in reality its far from true. There was one guy being shot a week in Finglas when I was working in Dublin yet no 'Wild Wild East' headlines.

I've spent 4 years in Uni in Limerick, live in Galway and worked in Dublin for a year and out of the three Galway is the one place where I've been/nearly been in more fights and felt threatened. Check out Supermacs @ 3am if you want to genuinely feel threatened.

On topic; went to a pub in Circklewood... didn't stay too long.

Any football fans who've ever gone to the den as an away fan (bermondsey) will know that that tunnel is quite possibly the most intimidating part of London you could find yourself in.

Theres a pub near Upton Park called the prince of wales which I thought I was going to die in.

Kentish Town is a tad depressing, as mentioned earlier Hackney is hugely depressing.

I've never had any major problems in London aside from that
