Dampness coming from the chimney.

    Hi,

    i just have noticed recently dampness appearing on the wall in my bedroom on the chimney breast. Any suggestions on where its coming from? my house is only 4 yrs old. Can i get my builder to look at this??

    Is it at the ceiling , if so check in the attic for signs of dampness , prob the lead flashing at the roof

    no, its approx 3-4 ft from the floor. the paint has bubbled as such. if i touched it it would crumble.its about the the size of an adults hand.

    is your fireplace closed up?
    Your always suppose to leave ventilation through a chimney to prevent dampness.

    I have clothing put into black bags stuffed up the chimney to prevent drafts and wind coming down. I haven't the top of the chimney sealed.. Would the clothing in a bag up the chimney cause this???

    What yoshytoshy means is that if rain gets into the chimney it should be allowed to drain-off and the chimney's inner surface to dry-off. Blocking the chimney (maybe with soaking materials) would a.) accumulate moisture (sponge effect) and b.) stop the ventilation, i.e. the drying by air movement transporting the moisture outwards.

    A leaking back boiler might be another issue to look at for the OP.

    I have no back boiler... I'll take the bags out, get it cleaned and light a fire. See how I get on from there... Anything else ???

    Not sure how airtight the bags of clothes would be ,but it's common practice to leave a vent in a chimney thats been blocked up. I've been doing it for years.
    The only alternative to not putting a vent in is to block off the top aswell.
