The brothers 05 320d starting making a rattling/squeaking noise about two weeks ago. It sounded like a water pump at first, but on further inspection the Crankshaft pulley was very loose. Parked the car up and went about ordering the parts.

I've heard about swirl flaps and a few other bits and pieces giving trouble on the 320d's, but never this. I rang Bmw and asked the parts man about it, if it was a common fault to which he replied "Hah, yeah they're well known for it" and then went on to quote me nearly 450 quid for it (incl. an aircon belt that snapped as a result) just for the parts. I couldn't believe the price of it, it's a 6 year old car with 89k miles on it and with a very common fault you would think some sort of good will would be implied.

Ended up getting it discounted somewhat for over 300 quid in a motorfactors and I just heard that that one motorfactors sold 4 of them last week!

How can they charge such extortionate prices for something that is such a common fault on, imo, a relatively new car?

As crankshaft damper pullies go, thats not a particularly bad price.
