Holloden House - Near Royal Oak - Location??

Folks,

I'm trying to find out any information about Holloden House (an old abandoned house). My information is that it is near the village of Royal Oak but on a recent trip down there I turned up empty handed. Does anyone know where exactly it is?

Any information appreciated.

There's an entrance to a "big house" near the bus stop/shelter, might be there?

Yes that's exactly where it is. There's an entrance and a ruined gate-lodge just up from the bus-stop at the Royal Oak on the old road as you go towards Leighlin.

Redtelephone is right - where he has the "B" on map is on old gate - hop the gate, enter the woods and keep walking straight. You can see the red barn and house on that map. Or near the bus stop at the Royal oak, there's another gate entry and a driveway leading up to it. Its on private land so watch out. You use to be able to get into the house but I think its all boarded up now.

Holloden was the home of Col Philip Doyne Vigors (1825-1903), a noted antiquarian and explorer. As far as I know the last occupant of the house was his granddaughter Faith O'Grady, who died in 1980.

No , it's owned by Tom McDonald from kilcarrig quarries, he has owned it for many years and at the moment they only seem to be drawing sand out of there.
I went up to the house last year with some friends as we hadn't been up these since we were kids , it's extremely over grown and quiet an eerie place , i got into the house via the stables and the interior is very very run down , I took some photos if I can find the folder they are in I'll post them up.

Perish the thought that someone is even thinking of building a new house up there, its criminal that such a beautiful house has been allowed to fall apart, the McDonnalds should be made to put it back to its former glory, before the entire country is overtaken by these absurd nondescript revolting bungalows, which seem to litter the countryside.:eek:
