Ok my 2008 Passat I serviced it last week using my mates lift.My question is The cannister that holds the paper oil filter on top of the engine. I removed the filter and replaced it which was grand.

When I had the sump guard removed I seen another cannister almost identical under the engine. Has anyone any idea what this is for. I should have taken a picture of actually.

Don't panic, that's the oil cooler. It looks very similar but it's not to be opened during the service.

Cheers. How come there is a nut on it like the oil filter for opening it. What would happen if I opened it??

No idea. Never had to open one. I've changed oil coolers but never got round to opening one up. Should be very little in there. An oil cooler is just a heat exchanger with a few tubes, fins and channels.

Cheers. I suppose there could be a small amount of used oil in it..

I nearly made that mistake on my father-in-law's 2.0l petrol Passat. I was servicing it for the first time and couldn't locate the oil filter. I saw something that looked liki it and had a go at removing it. Luckily I didn't try too hard and decided very quickly that that couldn't be it and had another look around. It is out of the way and a bugger to get at, but managed to change it.
