Should it be legal to own a licensed handgun in your own home in Ireland?

I think not, but I'd be interested to hear the opinions of the cretinous, knuckle-dragging denizens of After Hours. Post your thoughts if you can manage to cobble together a coherent sentence.

In theory it would be great if everyone could protect their home with a gun but in reality there would be carnage.

No. They are liable to be stolen and can easily be misused.

    Knuckle dragging?

    Cretinous?

    Cobble?

Yes, to your question. So I can kill you.

They controls should be slightly less stringent then they are but they are already legal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,650 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

Yes they should, simply because you won't find someone willing to shoot people who is afraid of breaking the law regarding licenced weapons. I'd feel much safer with a pistol in my night stand.

They are legal, just not military stuff like assault rifles and battle rifles

It is legal to own one, and keep it at home too!

You just need a valid reason to have it.

Security at hoe-downs, duelling, popping caps in peoples asses, expressing excitement by shooting 2 guns in the air and shouting yee-haww.

Seriously though, people with deer hunting licences can apply for licences for handguns, for finishing off a kill etc. Im sure there are other reasons but its fairly strict with regards to who can apply and get one.

A shotgun has valid pest control uses. A handgun however, serves no purpose other then killing people.

And curb stomping as a back up, you just don't know when your going to run out of ammo.

    Congratulations, this is 100% untrue.

What practical use does a pistol have other than shooting a person?

    Yes.

Law abiding citizens are good people and don't break the law so don't need guns for criminal activities.

Criminals are bad people and break the law anyway so will have guns if they want them regardless of whether it's legal or not.

    Simples.

It is legal to own a firearm, albeit with stringent rules.

At various stages of my life I've owned and had use of pistols, rifles, assault rifles and, on occasion, bigger stuff.
Never felt the urge to go out and commit carnage. I suppose it was because I grew up in a household where firearms were common.

My dad drummed 2 valuable lessons into me at an early age:-
    - Guns do not kill people - people do. Think very carefully about what you're about to do, then think again..and again a third time. If there is a shred of doubt, leave the damn thing alone. Once you pull the trigger, it is impossible to get that projectile back and you have to live with the consequences of your actions.
    - Owning a gun is a 24/7/365 responsibility. If you can't commit to it, don't get one.

My friends dad has a gun. Has to keep it locked in a safe.

So yes they are already legal

A criminal caught with a gun can get a prison sentence without having committed any other crime and can be stopped from hurting someone in this way. If they were legal you have to wait until they actually shoot someone before you can arrest them. Simples.

Remember son, a gun is for life, not just for Christmas. :pac:

You Sir, are the exact reason why there are stringent rules about owning firearms.

I was just curious as I thought that handguns were only used by special Garda units and the defense forces.

No way, they should not be made legal. Could you imagine the scenes outside Coppers on a Friday or Saturday night?

It would be like The Wire comes to Harcourt Street. Drunken dead idiots everywhere.
