Over what I am entitled to with my 3e account. I pay direct debit every month of 20e but today I tried to long on and couldn't and was told that I had to pay 40e before I could get back online.

I don't download or anything, although I think my flatmate has been downloading films. Anyone have any idea the amount of downloads he would have made to accrue that much of an extra bill?

Sorry, am clueless and am going to have to speak to him when I next see him.

    One film.

Its not that much. 700mb would be 1 movie.

Unless you typo'd and meant to say 680gb....

Your average movie is about 700mb so....
    TV show about 350mb.
A half hour tv show 175mb generally.

    .....

So it cost 40e to download a film??? That is not right, surely.

    680mb, that's a good quality porn session.

Or a single movie, could be that.

If you go over your monthly allowance its probably a charge they put on your bill.

im guessing 3e is a 3g modem which means you are using the mobile networks and therefore are on very strict bandwidth limits.

it is a rip off but you are told up front in your contract that those are firm bandwidht limits and if you go over them you will be penalised per mb

you should not be using that type of connection for anything other then browsing the web and checking emails. even using youtube will quickly send you over the limit

It depends what kind of plan you signed up for. There may be a minimum fee for anything over the allowance. Ye'd have to go through the small print.

You need to get a better deal, OP.

I think it is 18Gb from memory. I've never had to pay an excess before and I am online a lot. 40e all of a sudden seems very strange to me.

Yeah you're getting raped for that much.
We get charged maybe 5 euro per 1000MB or something, and even that is a fúcking disgrace.

I have had this account since December and never went over my limit. I couldn't believe it when I tried to log on and couldn't... perhaps I got the details wrong, but there is no way downloading one film could cost 40e.

Flatmate lying low. I have been away a few days and only realised the internet was down this afternoon when I got home. it may have been down a few days.

He's moving out in 2 weeks... I need to sort this out.

it is not about downloading a film or not its about the amount of mbs over you went

18gb is plenty for regular internet surfing, its very little if you start watching you tube and downloading anything

the chances are there is a t+c that either says that the flat rate penalty for going over your limit is 40euro or you will get charged per mb so you should probably read your terms and conditions

Your Internet provider DOESN'T CARE if it's a film, an album, the recipe for Coca-Cola - whatever. It's just all 1s and 0s to them, the more 1s and 0s over your allowance the more you pay.

Most providers cut you off at a certain point and ask that you ring them to expressly burst the limit. Not all though.

O2 tried to charge me €90 for 4gb over allowance. Not a chance i was paying that, they gave up on it very quickly when i told them i,d been a customer of them for over 10 years (digiphone first).

You have probably gone over alot too and they just let it slide.

I would have thought it is pretty damn foolish to allow your flat mate to be downloading anything through your account.

    Thanks.

Internet coverage is included in the rent. Never been over before in the 5-6 months he has lived here.

UPC still has data caps for their 20Mbs/30Mps packages, they advertise them as unlimited but the small print says 250GB/month, always check the fair usage policies

Their 100mb Package Fair Usage policy goes up to 500GB.

I actually can't comprehend how people use that much. I might download 80-90 gig a month, there is always someone on the internet with TV Shows, Movies and Youtube being streamed, with 4 devices capable of high amounts of traffic, I still don't get over 100 as far as I know.

Probably downloading BD rips around the clock? Still even at that you'd have download more movies than you'd even have time to watch. I feel there's a certain sickness involved with downloading tonnes of stuff just because it's available (much of which you're in all liklihood never even going to avail of).

    Embedding not working.....

If its anything like meteor, your control panel will have a data counter(if they used it on their own laptop this is no good).

As the others have said, these are designed for one person doing some light browsing. If your room-mate wants the download stuff they should fork out for a proper line.
