USA? Don't join them. Declare war on them, then quickly surrender an hour later, and then ask them for investment capital, bailout monies, and grants to rebuild our national infrastructure (as if we lost a war to them).

    China's time to shine surely?

China is facing economic issues of their own. The govt has been steadily inflating a property bubble for years now.

how? lax regulation, tax breaks and stampduty
    or something else?

From what I've read it's been fueled by mostly direct govt investment and relaxed lending rules, as well as a desire to prop up the GDP.

China still has a ways to go to before leading the way IMO.

They were leading the way for a good thousand years or so weren't they? Right up there with Egypt anyway.

    Maybe it's India's turn next.

NO imagine all the crappy wendys and taco bells in the country then yuk the only good thing would be the return of duncan donuts
Duncan who? :D We already have McDonalds and Burger King, how much worse can it get? Oh yes: Taco Bell. That and McDonald's were the only places open after 10PM on a Wednesday night in downtown Denver, a few years ago, and I should have gone to McDonald's instead.

But seriously - Ireland could join the USA as a State and not as much would change as you might think. The Federal government has strictly limited powers, as defined in the Constitution, and everything else is legislated at State level. For example: the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade made it illegal (under the Fourteenth Amendment) for States to ban abortion outright. But that has not stopped various States from making it extremely difficult to obtain one in practice e.g. States with one Planned Parenthood clinic in the whole State (with attempts to defund them), forcing women to undergo mandatory "counselling" by fake "doctors", making it illegal for insurance companies to pay for it, and so on.

Government resting upon the will and universal suffrage of the people has no anchorage except in the people's intelligence.

you think it's bad now within the eu just imagine how bad things would get if we went with the u.s.a. that is if you fancy the idea of losing most of your human rights and become the slave of the century. americans have lost almost all their freedoms so why the hell would anyone want to go with the u.s.a ?. thats a nutjob idea.
I'm a little hazy, but perhaps you could remind me what human right I don't have, and who I am enslaved to?

Since we have gone into economic meltdown and dealing with political corruption, and being pushed about by are EU neighbors, would you be inclined to turn away from the EU and look at joining the USA. Would you be opposed to the idea or all for it???
    Complete stupidity of an idea.

Join the USA, join England threads, etc?
For gods sake - are we seriously lacking in ideas and imagination that much!

The way I see the people who come up with this crap are the ones who are mad that Ireland is not raking in the same mountains of EU funding that it was even a few years ago. So rawr, let's find another club that will give us free stuff. Basically. Gods forbid that Ireland, it's economy, and it's people, should ever be expected to stand up on it's own.

you are enslaved from the fascist government that controls you and which has also taken away most of you're liberties, did you not know this or are you really residing in the united states of america ?. discontinuation of you're right to bare arms is on the agenda now as they will take that away from you as well soon. the land of the free my ass. well it used to be a long time ago but you americans allow your government to destroy all that the american forefathers worked so hard for, and also you allow the federal reserve (mafia} to rob you and every american blind.

why the fcuk would anyone in the EU want to change from the EU to the u.s.a boggles the mind. in a country were a disgruntled neighbour can call the police and have you arrested for terrorism and jailed without any proof of any kind if they so wish it, i mean comon what the fcuk brainwashing **** are they giving you people.

I think eveyone is lacking in ideas at this stage but op brought this up and america is a mess anyway. I'm just stunned at the poll regarding the people that would rather pick the u.s.a, nutjob that is, that country is slowly being destroyed from the inside out. next page who cares.

There is a lot of good ideas around - some are in the politics section alone, which come from good thinkers and are a good read - sadly a lot of ideas are being drowned out by the regurgitated same old crap dressed up and PR spun as something new by out of date established parties who are too set in their ways!

We need to move on from stupid ideas, old ideas and ideas that are being held back because bloody parties are afraid to rock the boat in fear that their own members might lose out financially (either in the Dail or outsides business interests - sometimes both!).

We as a country should be choosing our own path and have the confidence and desire as a nation to do this, to set our goals as a society/civilisation in our own right and achieve those goals and not pander to London, Washington or Brussels which we have done since the foundation of the state

    I heard <fascism prattle> <Non-Geneva Gun Rights Issue> <ignorant forefather prattle> <Non-Geneva Taxation Issue> <prattle> <baseless terror prattle>

You tried to sound if you actually knew anything about Human Rights, the US Constitutional 2nd Ammendment, or the intent of the forefathers. Or Fascism, for that matter. Way, way off from the idea of Fascism there. And perhaps to an Irishman you come off as genuine. But that was a total load of BS and didn't at all answer how I am enslaved or being denied any particular Human Right.
