DOE vs NCT for old 4x4

Hey looking for some opinions on which test is easier to get through with an older / slightly shabby machine.

I'm buying an old cheap 4x4 to use for moving a boat a few miles to and from
    my house the odd time.

deciding between passenger and commercial, passenger being handy for the few times i might need to bring people but requiring an NCT which i believe is much harder to pass than the DOE.
    Is this still true ?

    Thanks,
    Joe.

DOE is a million times easier.

In theory about the only difference is that the NCT tests the suspension on a shaker plate. Otherwise it's down to the NCT being done by a government contractor in dedicated NCT centres who is unlikely to give any leeway on minor issues.

My 110 sailed through the NCT no problem. You hear tales of DOE centres letting all sorts of stuff through but I don't think you should buy a vehicle on that basis, shows a poor regard for safety and maintenance.

doe centres are woefully variable in whats acceptable or not , you can get centres that once the tyres arent totally bald, the running gear and lights work and theres no black smoke youll be fine
