I've got a new 4gb stick to replace one of my 2gb. Does it matter which slot(Upper/lower) it goes in? I know they should ideally be paired, but I don't need 8gb and wanted to save the cash.

I'm running 3gb in my macbook and it's never given any trouble. That said, maybe for optimum performance they should be paired.

I think you get a 1/2% boost from paired RAM – so 99% of people wouldn't notice a difference.

As for the slots I'm guessing the lower slot should take the 4gb as it is accessed first?

It doesn't matter what order they are in. And the performance benefit from paired RAM is negligible.

How much did you buy the ram for?
