Just got my first road bike (claud butler san remo) and was wondering if I should change the pedals to clipless,what are the advantages of them,I ride DH and have always use flats.Also whats the deal with padded shorts? Would normal running style shorts do? Will be using it for going to work(18k each way) and training,…

Both questions have been asked a fair few times lately and a few other similar ones. You know what we're going to say. Get the pedals, get the shorts. Shorts are critical, clipless pedals you could live without but are far superior.

For the pedals and your described use, get a MTB system where you can walk in the shoes. MTB pedals work fine on a road bike; the advantages of a road system, especially for casual use, are minor- and you can't walk in them! Shimano SPDs are very good and highly reliable.
