French riot police protest alcohol ban

Currently French police including the riot squad is allowed to consume "moderate" amounts of beer, wine and cider. Now this might be banned and they are protesting.

What kind of madness is this?
How can they allow armed police officers to drink on the job? I will never set my foot in that insane country.

The drinking culture in most mainland European countries is quite different from ours,and having a beer or a glass of wine/cider is quite acceptable especially while eating.When i lived in portugal it was normal for the workers to have there coffies in the morning with some brandy or whisky before they went to work.

You forget they aren't Irish, they'll happily just have a glass of beer with their lunch for the refreshment, its a completely different culture. We can legally drive on that, what's the harm in them doing their job with the same amount?

Who in their right minds think it's alright for heavily armed police officers do drink on the job?

I wouldn't feel safe among armed people who are intoxicated. In normal countries you're not even allowed to drive after a glass of wine so why the hell should armed police officers be allowed even one drink?

France is a lovely country, having a glass of wine with lunch starts at an early age and is a way of life for the French.

Didn't notice it was you, huh, explains all. I just love the emotive language, you should write for the mail! They aren't "heavily armed", heavily armed is a f*cking bazooka, they aren't allowed "do drink" (as though its bloody heroin :rolleyes:) they can have a glass of something with a bite to eat, they aren't "intoxicated" after the one, in normal countries you are allowed drive after the one drink. In normal countries people view alcohol a lot different to the Irish, we need to be told not to go on a bender by being told not to drink at all, they don't. Its an all round more mature society.

Do you think people armed with lethal weapons should be allowed to consume alcohol on the job? When I did compulsary military service in my home country they were very strict about you being sober while on duty. In fact you could go to prison for being under the influence of alcohol while on duty.

Read the article you linked to, and the reason that they are being asked to ban is is because there was a picture of them drinking beer taken while they were on the job. Which provoked a bad reaction. Considering the article didn't cite a single case where drinking was an actual problem, does it really matter if they have a single drink over lunch.
