Tonight I Had a dinner party (a cheap come dine with me thing- 4euro wine and all that lol ) and of course the recession came up...

One of my friends mentioned she had seen a programme from usa last month, where a family were majorly in debt, and instead of taking away their kids ponies/dirt bikes/ not having oysters for dinner/ trying to get help with debts etc.... They were getting loans/on loans/ on loans... because"They didnt want their kids to suffer"

Ya because a debt collector bursting into your house isint going to traumatise them at all!!!

Jeez i remember living on beans , bread and noodles as a kid so my folks could pay the morgage, we used plastic bags with string tied to it for a kite, and were delighted when mam got us Puma runners from the 2nd hand shop. Im glad i grew up that way! Made me appriciate what i had!

BTW - im 25 , i know i sound 50 but im 25! Its never to young to appriciate the good old days:)

It's amazing how television perforates people's lives. Instead of just having people round for dinner, loads of people say that they're having a "Come Dine With Me" as if they were on telly.

No. You're just having people round for dinner.

And talking to a pretend TV camera while you prepare the meal alone in your kitchen doesn't make it any more than that.

With good parenting, you can be taught to appreciate things regardless of how much money you have/had.

We were never in want growing up because my parents work really hard (I'm not saying others didn't!). However, everything we got we were explained how lucky we were etc. etc. Our parents were great that way and I appreciate the smallest tokens, which I never expect anyway. If anything, it's probably why I'm more of a giver these days!

A "Come dine with me" makes us feel rich in a recession. Whats wrong with that???

Well, the entire point of "Come Dine With Me" is that it isn't just having people round for dinner. It's a competition where the quality of the food is judged by the guests and guests take turns hosting their own dinner parties. Anytime I've heard anyone saying they're doing "Come Dine With Me" means that there is at least a series of dinner parties and some even do the whole judging thing, with prize money going to charity.

I'm confused........is the OP suggesting that a single pride is OK, and that it's only when there are plural/multiples that it's awful ?
