22,000km average for set of Bridgestone Tyres????

I have a 07 Toyota Rav 4 and Bridgestone have told me that 22,000km is the norm mileage for that type of vehicle - are they having a laugh or what!

I had my jeep serviced at 72000km and was told that I needed new tyres, 4 days later (17/9/10) I put on a set of Bridgestone Dueler H/T 225/65/17 which were tracked and balanced. My jeep was NCT'd in January and mileage was 78575km tracking etc was perfect. Had my jeep serviced again last week at 83678km and they rang me from the garage to say that there was just 3000 to 4000km (think that was what they said - got such a fright) left on the front tyres and would they put a new set on it. Naturally enough I said no and brought the jeep back to where I bought the tyres.

They said that the front are now reading 4 and that the cold spell played havoc with tyres and that they could do with being tracked again (garage would have said that it needed to be tracked if it needed to be tracked and they would have tracked it). I said that we better swap the front to the back for the minute (as I always do) as they are wearing better and they said yes.

I had an appointment for last friday evening to have the work done but cancelled it as I was still awaiting a reply from Bridgestone which I got late on friday evening.

When I got home and thought about it I decided to contact Bridgestone by email and the reply I got back an engineer in Bridgestone is as follows:

"Thank you for your email dated 13th April regarding tyres on your Toyota Rav 4.
Bridgestone would agree with the recommendations made by ....

Bridgestone recommend that tyres on all vehicles be rotated front to rear approx. half way during there tyre life. This helps to maximize tyre life.

Once the tyres have been rotated we would expect that tyre life would exceed 22,000 km's which for this type of vehicle would be the norm.

We would suggest that in 6 to 8 weeks time the tyres could be checked again in ..... in order to evaluate there performance.

If I can be of any further assistance please do not hastate to contact me."

Surely 22,000km's (13670miles) is not the norm for a set of tyres which only pull's a trailer about once a month for about 10 miles and other than that it's regular road driving.

The original tyres were yokahama's and then a set of bridgestone which again did not great mileage and then the current set.

    Looking for your thoughts please.

far too many variables to be able to be able to make an opinion one way or the other.

    - Air Pressue
    - Driving style
    - Condition of roads
    - speed
    - braking forces
    - etc, etc .....

Always found that Duellers wear fairly fast. Think it's the compound in them.

THat does sound lowish. I had a set of Yokohama Geolandars 215/55 17 on a fairly hard-driven Forester and I got almost 40,000kms out of them.

What would you suggest as my next set of tyres, someone told me that yokahama's can no longer be got.

I got much better mileage out of them also.

I agree with whippet, those factors can make a huge difference. What size is the engine as diesels have more torque and can (pending on driving style) wear a tyre more quickly.
If Bridgestone are saying that the tyre should last 22000Km and going by the figures you have in your post, you got new tyres at 72K and they (according to the garage), need to be replaced at 88k which is only (16000km) which to me indicates a driving style of high tyre wear.

When you say the "front are now reading 4", I presume you mean 4mm. Taking into account the absolute legal limit is 1.6mm by rotating the tyres you should get the most from the tyre more than 3-4k??, although factoring in the driving style and variables mentioned by whippet.

Good main roads, keep within speed limits, geting aprox 30mpg which is ok as alot of short journeys, school run etc. 32psi

Garage said 3000km to 4000km max, tyre shop said 4mm (think he said 6mm to back)

yokohamas lasted on my parents mazda 3 from new for 45k kms. great tyre all round i found

tyres come with roughly 8mm new. legal minimum 1.6mm. if you did not rotate the tyres the maths says another 13000km left on the fronts.
now they are rotated they will last longer.
original tyres always last longer, for no definite reasons but the fact that all suspension parts are new may be a factor.
i have seen people go through tyres s lot faster than 22000.
    as stated too many variables.

i'm up to 36,000km on my set of Bridgestones on the Legacy...got a few more months left in them I'd say

    Rotated at 16k & 31k

Its likely to be some variable such as worn suspension, tracking off , type or road/driving etc. Just because you had the alignment done when you got the tyres doesn't mean its still perfect.

I had duellers on my old Navara from new and it was used mostly for motorway/national road driving and they hit the legal limit at a shade over 100,000kms

Some country roads are awfully rough on tyres. With the rough chippings barely coated in tar it's like driving over a grater. Add some bends and a spirited driving style and you can almost watch your tyres go down.

ive 23000 on my duellers and theres still about 5mm left on them, they were not treated nicely

here has also been no mention of if they are the correct speed and load rating for the car and which model of dueller they are(how suited to road use)

I get about 35k km on rears and about 14 to 16k km on the fronts of my car - front drive.

Driving style, roads (tracking) and pressures will greatly affect tyre life.

Is 687 the model no, Dueler H/T 687, 225/65/17 101H (and that's what it suggests on the inside pillar of the car with 32psi front and back), its an 07 Rav 4, d-4-d, sol. We live on the edge of town and our own driveway is tarmac so not alot of driving on rough roads.

Someone mentioned suspension problems, the NCT result for suspension test in jan was 'front axle 3% imbalance, rear axle 0% imbalance, Brake Test both Front & back Axle 0% imbalance, Side-slip/Alignment Test Front Axle -2.0m/Km Rear Axle -1.0m/Km.

I would appreciate suggestions for my next set of tyres - won't be dueler anyway.

Thank to everyone for their replies.

pirelli scorpion STR M+S , great road tyres, nice and quiet but still a fair bit of grip for dodgy roads, mud and snow rated

Went in friday morning to have the "tracking done and to have the front tyres swopped with the back" as advised.

The guy in the tyre shop was very helpful and decided to do a tracking reading of the tyres as they were it showed a 1.3mm difference in the whole vehicle so as I thought it did'nt need to be tracked again. The mileage was 84114km. He said that the tyre depth measurement is between 6 and 7 on what were the back (now front) and between 4.5 and 5 on what were the front tyres - different guy to whom measured them the first day that I brought the car over (family business and both were brothers).

I am to have them checked in aprox 6 weeks again.

Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

Just to update this thread, did'nt change tyres until now got another 14,000km out of them so now got around 36000km from the set which is alot better than 22K and I think about average - pricing around now for a new set.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread when I was in shock!

I got 20k out of my original Bridgestones on the front after rotating them.
I have Hankooks on their now instead as I am told they should last a good time longer.

Some cars are just hard on tyres. A lot of the VAG are really severe on front tyres. As was said, too many factors to decide what's normal. All you can do is measure your own experiences with a particular brand on a particular car, because you'll largely be doing the same kind of driving.
