DIY servicing - don't you need Diags?

I've read the DIY servicing thread and several other online references for servicing vehicles. BUT wouldn't you require a scanner and the knowledge to read it?
Its years since I've done anything myself, in the past I did all my servicing and repairs including replacing a clutch and other "big" jobs.Besides saving money I'm after the satisfaction of doing it myself and see it as a hobby. However, if I can't be certain the car will run like it was designed to I'd rather pay. I'm waiting for a cd I bought off ebay that is supposed to have all the relevent info for maintaining my car ( can't find haynes manual or similar for 04 MR2 convertible).Any advise welcome!

not as such no, i can't see you needing a comp for changing filters and plugs etc unless you need to turn off the service light but most cars have trick ways of doing this anyhow.

If car is running right (or seems to be) and no lights on dash no scanner needed me thinks on the like of an MR2

Always handy to have a scan tool, but defo no needed for routine maintenance. On some vehicles with electronic hand brake functions a scan tool is needed to release the brakes for changing the shoes, but yours should be grand.
