Do you call venues by their sponsored name?

Do you call the Point the Ohtue? Landsdowne road the Aviva?

I think it's all silliness tbh. If O2 bought every last music venue in the country and Aviva bought every grass field I'd still be a Meteor customer and my car would still be insured with AXA because they so happen to be the cheapest for me.

I also don't feel like an old fogey for calling it by it's old name, who knows in a few years these companies will rebrand themselves, go bust or not bother renewing their naming rights so the old name is likely to stick around a lot longer.

If they were sponsored by "atari jagaur" I'd call'em that...

I call them o2 the Point half the time and the o2 the other half, not intentionally.

The Aviva stadium I call the Aviva, took me a few months but just slipped into my vocab.

Opal fruits will ALWAYS be opal fruits though :p

I felt the same when the Lansdowne Corporation took over the old Kicky Pitch up there in Dublin 4.

I swore it'd always be the Kicky Pitch to me but here I am calling it Landsowne like a sap. :(

I call them by their old names.

And it's still opal fruits, not starburst!

No I call them by the proper name. Its going to get confusing though next month for the Europa Final at Lansdowne Rd, as due to sponsorship/corporate rules it cant be called the Aviva for the night, so for some really bizare reason they are calling it the Dublin Arena.

Sponsored name as I'm not from Dublin or into sport so I have no clue what they were called before.

I try to make a point of using their old names but slip up every once in a while and kick myself!

Whatever about a completely new venue taking on a sponsorship name, venues that have been around for years and have history shouldn't go down the sponsorship route. I know it brings in extra cash but I think it's just forgetting about it's history and cheap.

It also removes the venues identity, the amount of times something has been on in the "O2" and it turns out to be in London rather than Dublin.

yeah i always do, landsdowne road, the point, pubs that changed names

There's a pub under St. Stephan's Green in Dublin that has undergone a million name changes over the years. Forget the first name I first knew it as, then it was Down Under, then Major Tom's, then Down Under at Major Tom's then a few others which I didn't keep up with. Passed by it the other day and it had another new name since I saw it last!

Harry's on the green - and they're doing a much better job than the old crowd! It changed ownership a number of times.

Jesus no, I call them by their old names. Landsdown and the point depot for me. It's gas to see the Luas with "The Point" on it instead of the O2. Was bringing my niece to the point to see JLS (Thankfully I didn't have to go in) and she asked "Is the point near the O2?".

its always been lansdown to me, but this thread just reminded me it changed name :o

It will always be known as lansdown to me, so if you say "I was blah blah aviva" you will always get this

The shop im my local village changed its name from the family name to Centra. I still call it by the family name and its a great laugh when you say you are going to "Family name shop" and all the non natives would go "there are two shops?"

I always say the O2 without even thinking. But Landsdowne road and the Aviva is 50/50. So many people just say the 02 and the Aviva that it's easier just to say it sometimes.

The Point isn't the Point as it is called the o2. And it is a new building. Same goes for the Aviva.

No, though I only use in front of people young enough that would be left totally confused by it.

Hilarious making it in reference to broadband.

    "Me broadband is f*cked".

"Get on to the Department of Posts & Telegraph then".

    "Ya wha'?"

Sure lots still say Bord Failte and it changed its name to Failte Ireland years and years ago

Go to Galway and get a taxi to the "old RTC". And that name changed to GMIT in 1998

People are slow to change I guess
