Ignorant attitudes towards music.

We were having a small sesh in my neighbour's apartment with my flatmate (18 year old girl, very mainstream taste in music) and my neighbour put on a bit of Sublime (relatively unknown among alot of my friends, but quite easy listening) through the speakers. To which point my flatmate changed the the song within 20 secs. The band? Only the musically inovative and under-rated JLS!
I can be a bit of a music snob, and ever since moving to college I couldn't understant why people put music on their iPods that's on the radio ALL THE TIME! And also be so rude as to think that their music taste takes priority over others, giving them only 20 seconds of airtime.

My question to you is, what do you think is the most ignorant attitude towards music?
(Eg: Not liking something because: it's too old? not in the charts? very unknown? too popular? not from a specific type of genre?)

People just go with what they are familiar with.

Same reasons people go to foreign countries and order McDonalds or go to the pub and order Bud and ignore the stock of craft beers.

Something different and obscure may be good but I've to spend time and possibly money to try and I may be disappointed

You can hear the latest songs on the radio for free, go with what's popular.

She wasn't being ignorant in musical tastes, she was just being ignorant by changing somebody elses music in their home.

If I put on music in MY house and somebody changes it then you're leaving through the window.

I think its a shame people don't seek out lesser known artists and genres and only stick to what they hear on the radio, in the club or on music stations, I'm sure they would like some of it if they just gave it a chance. Maybe they just don't have enough motivation or interest to bother.

Its just as annoying as people who scoff when you say you like "a bit of everything" when asked what music you like, a if theres only one genre of music you should like and stick to  I used to work for HMV so over the years started listening to stuff I would have never had an interest in before, so flicking through my mp3 player theres stuff from Johnny Cash to The Beastie Boys to classical, Miles Davis, 80's cheese, System of a Down to The Prodigy and everything along the way.

People who listen only to whats in the charts are equally as annoying to people who only listen to bands who play in front of 12 people and are so hip it hurts.

Exactly, saying you like a bit of everything isn't necessarily a cop out like people think it is!

This might be a bit more pedantic but people who describe any electronic music as "techno" kinda annoys me.

I get it a lot when I go and put on some metal at parties, ffs its one song I sat through all your sh!te for hours, listening to Saxons "747- Strangers in the night" Aint gonna kill you.

"No one likes that type of music put on something else!"

Killing in the name comes on

    "Oh this song rocks!"

    Urge to kill, rising.

People tend to dismiss whole genres based on what's popular within the genre or the image that may be associated with it. There's great and terrible music in every genre.

Liking only one genre and hating all others.

Music doesn't cost money old man! Haha
But anyways, I hate SO much of the music that my friends play, but not enough to change the song after 20 seconds to give some folk a taste of my snobby elitist way of life.
I can see the appeal of having a comfort zone with music, but to actively fight off any unknown influences is a tad ignorant.

In fairness no one really wants to listen to metal at a party. Time and a place imo.

As well as that I put on some Thin Lizzy and she replied, in her Offaly accent, "Would ya not put on something a bit more modern?"

    Put it into perspective. :)

Then wtf is killing in the name?

Take the song I mentioned, its not even heavy.

I dislike modern "chart type" music because it is mass-produced, dull, repetitive tripe that they churn out. The performer usually hasn't written it and the song generally becomes a one hit wonder that will be featured on an album with even more dull shíte. Then in a year if its lucky it might make it to a "NOW 4*" CD. I tend to find the people who listen to that stuff change their music like its a fashion along with their clothes.

Give me some old-skool blues like the Allman Brothers or SRV which is timeless for one reason, because it isn't shíte.

The above is just my 2 cents :p

Many dickheads I've met throughout life in college have almost ruined Pink Floyd for me. Pretentious **** who with the mentality that if you listen to Pink Floyd you are automatically smarter than everyone and all other types of genres are shìt.

You know the types, they ask you what music you listen to and then assume your intelligence based on what music you listen to. Utter dickheads.

"Metallica are so shìt.................OMG, Enter Sandman, I loooooove this song...........it's so heavy.......... *awful attempt at headbanging* - Die in the firey pits of hell!!

The way I see it is if its your house and/or your party then your music gets to take preference(but not only your music you don't want people who love to get up and dance having to listen to 20 min classical guitar instrumentals:D) . If someone isn't happy then they shouldn't be so lazy and host thier own party/gettogether so they can choose what music to put on.

I preferred their earlier material, before they sold out and became bland and went mainstream.
Now that they are popular I don't like them anymore, in fact I listen to bands that don't even exist yet

Lets be honest, until Christmas last year, if I put 'Killing in the name of' on at a party, the same people that listen to it now would tell me to 'turn off that grunger sh1te'.

I'd nearly prefer JLS to 3rd rate 'ska'. Actually, just leave both off. I'd prefer to sit in silence.

Not if the party is full of metal heads! Now that's a fun party!

Exactly, people like what they are told to.

Does anyone else not like music to be absolutely blaring. What's the point? How can you listen to it properly when your eardrums are being assaulted?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,242 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

those people who refuse to accept rap or dance artists as talented , people who say the beetles influenced everything and people who kick up a fuss when you put on a song they havent heard , they automatically call it shít because they didnt here it on music channels or the radio

'hipsters' are by far the worst for music ignorance/snobbery , followed by girls under the age of 17

This drives me insane! Im going to stick my neck out here and say that I personally feel that Floyd only have a handfull of songs worth listening to.

The snobbery when it comes to that band is unreal. Dopes that think they gain IQ if they listen to it and dismiss everything else.

Fair point I suppose. Though if you want to listen to Saxon at parties you might have better luck at your dad's 50th ;)
