In fairness, nixers are the average person doing what the rich can do legally - avoiding tax, exploiting the system and working for maximum profit.

Unregistered work while claiming unemployment benefits or disability benefits. It could be cash in hand work at a restaurant, building site etc.

There's probably more chance of winning the Lotto than finding anyone working on a building site.

You find it unacceptable. That does not make it your business. Let the authorities take care of it. Look after your own affairs.

What if your affairs are being directly affected by the black market? For example, how can a legitimate business compete against a person working for cash, no tax/vat and shockingly, no insurance.

Take every cent you can find..............this is now called SURVIVAL!

    The dance is over people!

Whats the story with this new savings account in BoI that offers 3% interest that rises to 6% after the first year, seems like a half decent investment plan.

This thread is really going to stop SW fraud and gte those lazy sods back to work, well done OP. When your typing threads like this one and reading threads like this one are you working? I am sick of dole/tax cheats draining our economy. The black economy is thriving in Ireland with alot of workers seen the dole as a way of topping up their wages to pre-recession levels. Companies operating legitamitly cannot compete with competitors who are not tax compliant. I know alot of tradespeople who are working sporadically however they justify not signing off on the days they are working as they will only be signing back on in the coming weeks. From May 1st I will be passing on info on 1 Dole cheat per day to the social welfare for the month of May. Our country will never recover if this fraud continues.

How do you know if people are signing as working or not working? The system allows for people who are working sporadically. The form requires an x or an o on each day. one can sign as working for a few days or a full week or two and keep their claim open. They don't get paid sw for the days they are working, but don't lose three days, each time they sign off/on. Of course there are true dole cheats, as well, the worst of which never did an honest days work.

Yeah, how dare people try and make a bit of extra money when everything in this country is over-priced and the government does everything it can to tax all the money it can bleed out of the people. How dare these people try and get by. How dare they? HOW DARE THEY?!

why is it ok for these people to make extra money when the rest of us have to take pay cuts. Not forgetting the are prepared to work for a lot less which stops legitimate tradesmen from getting work.

How dare they take social welfare, rent allowance, medical cards and anything else they can get while doing cash jobs.

It becomes my business because tax payers pay for their SW. I find it unacceptable. I would have no problems reporting any neighbours doing this.

If they are working to feed their families pay the bills , no problems.

I think it is more sinful to see lazy ***** who have 'legitimately' drawn the dole all their life and if there was work on the bed they'd lie on the floor.

What is you opinion of people doing nixers while on social welfare? I think this behaviour is truly appalling. They should be punished for it with a prison sentence of no less than 3 months. I for one don't look kindly upon SW fraud. What is your opinion?

you would not be saying this if you served your time,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and if you did maybe your not as good as them:D

    Mind your own business.

Actually it IS his/her business if they're a tax payer. I don't think anyone would have a problem with earning a small few quid to supplement your dole. Especially in today's world. But signing and maybe earning another week's wages - on our backs? I don't think so.

Minimum deposit 20,000 euro. Might create a problem for a lot of people.

I'm on social welfare at the moment and I'd just like to say thank you for funding my xbox playing, drinking, partying and general time wasting.

Wind ups aside though, when I'm working and paying taxes, I couldn't give a **** if my tax money is going to people on SW, fraudsters or not. Even if every single person committing welfare fraud is caught, it's not as if taxes are going to go down is it? The money is just going to get used elsewhere. And probably somewhere else i couldn't care less about. I'd rather have my money going towards letting someone enjoy their life tbh. Personally i couldn't stand the idea of living my life taking money off the state but if someone else wants to do that, well, let them! It's not as if they're actually doing any harm other than making some of you a little bit jealous because they're getting money for doing nothing. Besides, it gives you self righteous dickheads something to complain about, right?

These are the same people who are giving out about the Public Service etc. It is perfectly ok for them to claim social welfare and work. They are earning a lot more than the rest of us who have to go to work.

    self righteous maybe, jealous No.

Everyone, quote, everyone does nixers! ... from guys on the social welfare to your average NTL guy.

As someone said eariler in the thread, "how dare people make a bit on the side" - while banks and everyone else can rip us off. oh but thats "different" is it

    + 1 million.
Finally a person with his head on his shoulders. that realises what taxes are all about and not living in the clouds that as a tax payer you have some sort of magical right (people, taxes will always exsist. and taxes will get higher and higher despite tax fraud (nixers)

Exactly the opposite of what should happen, people should be demanding to know why their hard earned taxes are not being used to fund a better health service, a better schooling system, a better transport system.

People should take much more of an interest in knowing exactly where THEIR money is going, there is far too much wastage.

Before I left Ireland a year ago, I paid nearly 500 a week in taxes, and you know what I got for that? basically nothing. One free clean from the dentist and a couple of other non items.

Ive since moved, and paying a touch more in tax, but have a first class completely free health and dental system, a completely free schooling / and kindergarten system , a super cheap and efficient public transport system.

Before moving i had the same thoughts as the OP, since moving away i have realised how much other countries demand absolute transparency in where their taxes go.

I once reported someone who was working full time, and drawing dole whilst living with his fiancee who was claiming lone parent allowance, I reported them out of anger the day I had to pay 50 for my baby to see the doctor and i realised what a raw deal i was getting, even though most of the damage is done by the politicians and the SW cheats are probably a drop in the ocean.

I dont regret reporting them, but nothing happened.

Taxes will always be there, but its what is done with them, its this attitude that gives the government more room to **** about with the taxpayers money.

And its not a magical right, its logic, would you hand over money to a mechanic without knowing what work has been done to your car.

I suppose from my post it would come across that I'm ok with this kind of thing, when really I'm not, i was more referring to people who occasionally do a little bit of work on the side when the chance comes up. And i completely agree with you about the tax transparency bit, I suppose my stances comes from a lack of faith in the people running this country to actually put tax money towards things people actually want, so i think it's better off going to people who will enjoy it.

The odd once of task is not a problem, or the lady who does a few hours of babysitting / cleaning / ironing a week. This will never truly affect the system, nor is the a real way to police it.

The full time scammers are taking tax money and undercutting genuine people too.

    exactly.
but thats what defines a nixer pretty much. something on the side.
if you are on the social and doing a job regularly... thats social welfare fraud.

I mean some of the personal examples i've seen of nixers:

ntl guy running an extra cable into another room on the side
a women calling out to do someones hair (hairdressing)
a tradesman doing a job on the side (hanging a door, fixing a tap, fixing a new socket) its all the same.
    etc etc.

theres nothing wrong with the above I find.

The coutry is badly divided when you see the likes of Mr quinn writing off a debt of 2.6 billion and people give out about other people trying to earn an extra few bob to make ends meet, For the people who have work and are lucky to have it just hope that you dont lose your job because if you do, you will come to the realisation of how hard it is to cope financially if you have a mortgage, insurance and tax, esb, kids. You can be guaranteed you wont turn town an extra bit here and there no matter what morals you have....I dont agree with people working full time and gettin sw but nixers which are odd jobs and far from regular whats the problem with that..
