How long can I drive with wearing fan belt?

    Hi

I drive an old 97 Corsa 1.2 and today I heard a rattling noise when I was driving. I pulled over and noticed part of the edge of the fan belt had cut and that rotating was making the noise. The bit that tore just looks like a string. I'm not sure if something cut it or is it just wearing.

Anyway I intend to change it at the weekend. I drove home afterwards fine with no noises. The belt is still intact and seems tight and strong enough but since this slight edge came off it I'm wondering how long will it wear or could it snap fairly easily? I don't think it would myself.

I'm just wondering would it be safe enough to drive on till the weekend? I dont intend on going to far anyway and would I be right in saying if it did snap and I just turned the car off I shouldn't do any damage?

    Cheers.

If it snaps the alternator won't be driven, no actual damage should be done. It's far from ideal to drive it like this but there is a good chance it will not snap if you aren't doing a few hundred miles between now and the weekend. I'd cut off the flapping bit though.

Cheers, yeah I cut off the flapping bit after I heard the noise from it and it seems to have been fine since. Think I'll chance it until the weekend anyway. Worst case scenario I'll get someone to tow the car home.
