Ever measure your future age by Olympics and World Cups and get freaked out?

Was talking about this with friends today. I do this a lot and always get freaked out. The Olympics and the World Cup come around so quickly, it always just serves as a reminder that time's a-marching on!

When London 2012 was announced in 2005, I was 21. I remember thinking "I'll be 28 then but that's AGES away". Well, now it's next year. Fúck!

And when the next World Cup rolls around I'll be 30!

Same kind of deal when considering what age you'll be when your passport expires!

Goddamn major sporting events/passport confronting me with my own mortality!

    *shakes fist*

Yeah, I know, but nobody really thinks about their age until their birthday rolls around, whereas if you consider the stuff in the OP for a sec it can be a bit .

I can hardly remember being 25. But my missus isn't even 25 yet. So she helps keep me in with the "young" crowd :)

I think of it by the name of the decade.
I'll finish the teenies in my 30s.
    The 20s in my 40s
    The 30s in my 50s
    It doesn't seem as bad.

Nope but increasingly I do get freaked out when each World Cup begins and I think "how the fúck did the last four years go by so quick?"

Yeah, even the census is freaking me out a bit. Where did those last five years go?

Was 9 myself and same. Got shivers from reading your post (the good type from remembering the goal)

Unfortunately I can still also just about remember losing to Italy in 1990:(

No, once I got over the first one, the rest was all down hill, easy sailing.

I was at Euro 88 when I was 7.

I went to the Holland game.

Yes. Since I've been about 12/13 every World Cup that comes around I say to myself, the next World Cup I'll be x, I'll definitely go to it, I'll be able to take time off then, better start saving now. Every time it actually comes around I haven't saved, and I seem to be in a rut of doing exams every time there is a World Cup or Euros on. Definitely next time I'll go*

    *I know I won't though :(

That goal is one of those "I remember what I was doing" moments for me. I was 10 and we had just come in from Saturday evening mass. I was sitting at the kitchen table drawing whilst my Dad watched the match. My Dad's excitement and THAT back-flip are the two things that stick with me.

I remember watching the closing ceremony of the Barcelona 1992 Olympics thinking there's not another one for four years?? It seemed an age away..in my defence, I was only 8

Then suddenly it was 1996. So yeah, 4 years is a lot shorter than it used to be...

I remember watching the 1964 Olympics.
I think I should just gas myself now and have done with it.

Ah, if you were only four it's not so bad! :p;)

The first Olympics I remember was Seoul 1988, I was four. I remember Greg Louganis skinning his head on the diving board.:(
