I've a 1999 Toyota Corolla 1.3 Terra with 181,000 miles on the clock that's a little low on oil. I've about 7 litres of 10w40 left over from a previous car and I'm totally skint at the moment. The manual says it should take 10w30.

Would it have any serious effect on the car to top it up with 10w40 for a month or two until I can afford to give it a full service?

Looking on-line I'm seeing some guys actually recommending 10w40 in place of 5w30 for cars with higher mileage. Any thoughts?

The other possibility is that one of the bottles of oil is an untouched bottle from Halfords. Would they exchange it for 10w30 without a receipt?

Should be fine. I wouldn't worry bout it.

You'll be fine to top it up with 10w40.
