Say, what's the difference between a diesel and a petrol car anyway?

Surely you wouldn't negotiate a roundabout in 6th? You should be ready to stop on the approach to one.

not always of course ,but some roundabouts where i live afford you a good view of all roads leading to it and sometimes i will have enough momentum to carry through the roundabout in 6th of course the car will struggle a little and it is a lazy way to drive but it can be done sometimes but i find changing back to fifth no help in that situation you just have to get the turbo spinning before you can get motoring again

    It's chronic driving really :p
You should get an auto if you are that lazy behind the wheel.

OK, the economics are also important to me. But I do not find my current petrol engine (1.6l 105bhp) to be uneconomical. I do approx 55km a day, except on weekends which can vary between 0km and 50km a day. At the moment I spend €40 per week on petrol. Can I expect much more of a saving on that if I go diesel? Difference in road tax is €50, not really a deciding factor for me.

    55km x 5.5 days = 302.5km
    €40 @ €1.48/l = 27 litres

    = 8.93l/100km
convert to mpg = 31.6 mpg

The current 1.6 HDI 110BHP diesel engine can easily do better than that. (e.g 4.5l/100km or 62mpg combined driving)
That same 302.5 km could cost you roughly €21 per week.

I was actually disappointed driving an Audi RS4 V8 because it needed to be wrung out rather than having the shove of a Remapped TDi

I lurk here a good bit and some of the fapping over diesels is a joke, a pure joke (see the unbelievable nonsense above).

The good thing about it is, while the badge conscious lads jizz in their pants over underpowered, overpriced, diesel, saloon lumps, very very good petrol cars are going for a song! Just bought a 08 large engine turbo charged petrol car for a fraction of what it cost originally. The dour diesel equivalent is a whopping 11K dearer. 11k, that's some savings on tax and fuel you would want to be making.

As for driving them? Give me this any day over most of the three tonne tessies people love.

I've changed from a petrol to a diesel and I can honestly say it has been the biggest regret of my motoring life so far. I frequently get strange looks from other motorists as I grip the wheel, screaming, while trying to pull off from a roundabout at 6mph. The noise as well, I used to love bopping away to tunes on long journeys in the old petrol car - now the diesel is so loud, you can barely carry a conversation.
