i'm from Cork it being called The Rebel County really doesn't make me worry we'll be tied to any other event, it's a historical term that some cork people are proud to use.

Cork is nicknamed "The Rebel County", as a result of the support of the townsmen of Cork in 1491 for Perkin Warbeck, a pretender to the throne of England during the Wars of the Roses.
The common misperception of Cork's nickname of The Rebel County is that it derives from a strong connection with the fight for freedom from British occupation of Ireland. In fact, the origin of the name relates to Cork's participation in internal British conflict several centuries earlier. The name was used again at the time of the War of the Two Kings. In later years the term did come to refer more to the struggle against the British than to the Warbeck affair from which it had originally derived, as this had been largely forgotten by that time.

This is why ye are called the rebels because ye fought with the english against another english man.
Most Cork people dont know this or else ye choose to forget it.

Why aren't the Cork people allowed their own state? It does not seem fair.

Jackeens will you get it after a third time or has all the heroin melted your brains.:pac:

1Cork have won more all irelands across all codes of the GAA than anyone else.(120 compared to Dublins 53).
2Cork are the only county to win both senior all irelands in the one year in modern times.(Tipp did it in 1890)
3Cork(with the exception of Galway) is the counly county that sets out every year with realistic hopes of winning both senior all irelands.
4Jack Lynch the only man to win 6 all ireland medals in a row and you know jackeens that he was a better taoiseach than haughey and ahern.
5Teddy McCarthy the only man to win 2 senior all ireland medals in the one year.
6Christy Ring the greatest hurler of all time.
7Cork has produced more internationaly renowned socer players, rugby players, athletes and other sporting stars than any other county.
8Two Cork men Michael Collins and Tom Barry got the english out of 26 of irelands 32 countys.(Didn't they do a better job than those 1916 nancy boys)
9If i were you Dubs i would keep quiet about being the capital of Ireland.Kilkenny was the capital before the english took over Ireland.
10Cork is nicer than Dublin it has all the best bits of Paris,Rome and Milan in one package,Dublin is a combination of south central LA,West Belfast and Londons east end.As we say in Cork Dublin a million junkies surrounded by shopping centres and a smattering of unsophisticated muckers from Leitrim and Roscommon.
11All of Dublins all ireland winning football teams before 1958 were made up of culchies.Dublin have only won 2 football all irelands since the 70's the last in 1995.The Dubs also have not even been to an all ireland final in that time.
12Dublin have not won a hurling all ireland since 1938.No true blue Dublin team has ever won the hurling all ireland.
13Your not from Corks Dubs seek professional help and get over your inferiority complex
14If i were you Dubs i would be very ashamed of your history of placidly facilitating the adminstration of British Rule in irelands for 800 years.
15Two men Jimmy Barry Murphy and Brian Murphy have all won all irelands medals in minor,u21 and senior hulring and football.
16Go on admit it it sickens you that two Cork men won you your independence. :pac:
btw Roy Keane not that drunkard Paul McGrath was the greatest footballer that Ireland has ever produced.

Do you know why Cork forces suported Mr Warwick?Do you know what happened when the king who came after henry the 7th and his successors came to power and what happened in Ireland.I'll give you a hint Oliver Cromwell and 1601.(That's when the o'neill clan lost there fight against the british overlords and they had to flee ulster thus freeing ulster up for the plantation of english settlers.)Of course those settlers have now become the people known as the unionists in the north. Now to think that we could have avoided all that if we had an irish friendly king of britain.Of course only a Cork man would have the foresight to see this.:pac:

On another note im sure most people find are appaled by yeterdays murder in Omagh. The vast majority of Irish people voted for the good friday agreement and these people have betrayed the Irish peoples political will. These people are not rebels and they are not warriors like Michael Collins and Tom Barry. They are thugs and criminals who who hide behind the mask of republicanism when it suits them. They are also threat to the decent law abidng citizens in our cities. They say they wan't to get rid of drug dealers but really it's all about getting rid of the ones that don't pay protection money and then claim it's the good for the comunity.Rebels they most certainly are not.Oh well i supose there will be a few celebartory drinks in some West Belfast drinking den and then they can go back to collecting her majestys dole money.

Why do you have to put a post up about Dublin in a Cork thread? Cork is a great place, you shouldn't have to resort to putting other places down to make it look good. It bangs of insecurity.

Stand up and be proud of your county. Don't go sniping and bitching about everyone else.

Going back on topic. I think you Dubs are trying to overcompensate with your anti english attitude. The facts are that for 800 years you provided the british with a base to rule Ireland from and Dublin was also part of an area known as the pale a region nortorious for it's loyalty to the crown.Admit it your looking forward to feeding Lizzy her tea and crumpets in Dublin castle. You really are looking forward to waiting on here hand and foot just like the old days when you used to serve the english lords in Dublin Castle.:pac:

It was Dermot MacMurrough, King of Leinster who invited over Strongbow and later Henry II
The bould Dermot was based in Dublin of course

Dubs have a lot to answer for. Ireland was never invaded, they were invited over!

Here in Munster we had real Chieftans like Brian Boru, a Clareman

No part of the state needs that reference right now, ie; especially after yesterdays bomb killing - we (any decent Irish people) sure as hell don't want to be called "rebel" if its seen in light with the murdering bastarrds of yesterday!
I'm fairly sure the good people of Cork don't.

Judging by poster Krudler, I wouldn't be in the slightest bit surprised if they did. Cork City is still, after all, calling its "mayor" the "lord mayor" because of a title the British gave them only in 1900 - despite the historical title being "mayor" since the fourteenth century.

So much for the "rebel county" and embracing its British royalist cult.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Cork get the name of the rebel county because of its loyalty to the Empire?

In any case I don't care if she visits or not, I personally won't be waving any flags, but she's more then welcome if it attracts more tourist to Cork.

Er, No. Although John A. Murphy (not a reliable source on such matters at the best of times) has claimed it was given its name in the sixteenth century by the English for resisting it. Considering the English were calling all the Gaelic-Irish and Norman-Irish "rebels" at the same time it doesn't really amount to much.
