THE Rebel County now looks likely to host Queen Elizabeth II during her historic Irish visit next month. May 20 is the likely date for the Queen to visit the Republic's second city.

Cork has waged a determined campaign to be included on the three-day itinerary and the Lord Mayor, Cllr Michael O'Connell, says he is now "very optimistic".

"I sent an invitation off to the British Embassy some weeks ago," he told the Sunday Independent. "We had a response back last week and have had formal discussions.

"It is now looking very likely and very possible that the Queen will visit Cork towards the end of May.

"Confirmation will come from the British Embassy in relation to all the events she will be undertaking when she comes to Ireland.

"My understanding is that will come in the next week or so," added the Lord Mayor.

Cllr John Mulvihill said a royal visit would help transform Cork's tourist season and could create hundreds, if not thousands, of extra jobs.

During her Irish sojourn, the monarch is also expected to visit the Irish National Stud in Kildare.

Meanwhile, University College, Cork, has launched a determined bid to ensure that US President Barack Obama visits the city next month.

UCC has formally invited him to deliver the inaugural lecture in honour of Frederick Douglass, one of the president's great personal heroes.

Mr Obama has also been asked to unveil a statue on UCC's campus to Douglass, who died in 1895.

A former slave, Douglass led the abolitionist movement in the US and was renowned worldwide as a writer, orator and social campaigner.

He visited Ireland during his lifetime and became a firm friend of several leading Irish figures, including Daniel O'Connell.

President Obama regularly quotes and refers to Frederick Douglass and his writings

The "rebel county" ?

What the fcuk! Has the editor of the Indo' lost their marbles?
No part of the state needs that reference right now, ie; especially after yesterdays bomb killing - we (any decent Irish people) sure as hell don't want to be called "rebel" if its seen in light with the murdering bastarrds of yesterday!
I'm fairly sure the good people of Cork don't.

A stupid, ill-timed insensitive way to start a report from the Indo.

I don't see the point in reading more into it than is necessary.

It's called the Rebel County for what ever reasons !

Ok I can't direct how you will make this connection but no one else will because there is no connection to make. If anything you are making it worse because your complaints about the rebel tag will make people ask if there is a reason to suspect Cork people for what happened in Omagh. Its a nickname that has been attached to the county for around 90 years, everyone knows that it has nothing to do with what happened in the North.

The "Rebel County" is a term long used with pride by people in Cork and rightly so. Just like many Dubs claim to be from the "City that fought an Empire"
What some yahoos do in Omagh shouldn't be allowed to dictate that others must tip toe and watch their words for fear of being associated with it.
The opinions of those daft enough to make such an association aren't worth worrying about.

O' I agree. don't get me wrong (sadly some will just for bating or stupidity).
My point was/is that some people not reading boards.ie, will read that this morning and although maybe proud of being historically known as the "Rebel county, might feel the wording of the article might be ill-timed. Thats all.

The reporter and maybe the editor that passed it, might have used better judgement at least for a few days.
I could be wrong - its just a thought.

I doubt the Queen has much of a say in her itinerary during her visit. With her being fond of the saying "one must do one's duty" blah blah bl....

So I do feel some sympathy for the poor woman at the thought of being dragged down to Cork.

I realise she's not the most popular person on this island, but what did she do to deserve being sent down there? :eek:
