first of all, weather somone is funny is based on perception and therefore not everyone is going to agree, so some men will find some female comics funny, some women will hate specific comics etc...
so a poster saying for example "sarah silvermen is a funny femal" followed by "yea right, you'd find more laughs at sunday mass than from that cow" dosn't prove anything.these comics obviously have a following or they would not have various TV shows etc...

I peronally hate the sou and that Joan Rivers one, but I also hate that Bill Bailey sap too

    sarah silverman no?

Not for me, no. She's one I find annoying more than anything, to be honest.

    Hilarious.

Personally, I find Joan Rivers very funny.

However, I accept that men don't 'get' women's humour, as it's more gender specific, whereas men's humour encompasses a much wider range of topics.

Men can also generally deliver a punchline much better than a woman.

Maybe you're right. I've heard this before.

Name a good one was the question

And I named seven (in my opinion) very good ones. The fact that you haven't even heard of Sandi Toksvig would suggest that you haven't been exposed to a very broad range of comedy. To find good comedians (male or female), it's sometimes a good idea to look beyond the mainstream.

Very true. Youtube is great for sampling new comedians.

Men can get away with certain behaviour eg. farting, making crude jokes, mocking whereas it doesn't suit a woman to copy this behaviour. Men I agree are the far superior comedian and I am female.
I think male comedians are brilliant:)

I wonder if part of it is that women are afraid to let go of their vanity a little bit?

women are funnier in a show but TBH not as stand up comedians.

    roseann barr was funny

    ellen degeneres is not funny

There are some genuinely funny female stand ups. I named some in post 5. Plus Sandy Toksvig.

No guys! I've always thought female stand up comedians were dire, until I happened by chance to find Roisin Conaty. An english stand up. Google 'Roisin Conaty good news' to see her routine, I promise you it will be worth it. Best female stand up and one of THE best stand ups I have seen. A diamond in the rough.

As much of an equal opportunist as I am, this fact is in general, undeniable.

But, season one of Big Train. Julia Daves, Amelia Bulmore.

Lynn from Alan Partridge. Sweet Dee from always sunny in Philadelphia. Lindsay Bluth Fünke (Portia de Rossi) from Arrested development...

    ect...

Lynn is a good shout, although I would say the female comics on Arrested development were the weakest of the cast Lindsay, Maeby, Lucille compared to GOB, Tobias, Buster, Michael, George Michael and the narrator guy.

Ellen deGeneres is one of the most annoying people on this planet. If that is the best women can come up with humour wise, then god help us.

I really like Joan Rivers though - very sharp, hard to watch sometimes, but an excellent comedienne.

Generally men are funnier than women - they are far more willing to take the p*ss out of themselves, can take a slagging & give one far easier. Although male & female humour is very different though. Needs to be a brave man to really enjoy a women's humour.

I think Sarah Millican and Josie Long buck the trend there and can and do appeal to both sexes.

What have random 'funny' people got to do with the thread topic?
    Nothing...

I know, bringing up comedians in a thread about funny people - what madness! The two are in NO way linked.

The topic was 'in general why are men funnier than women?'

Simply naming a few people off the telly who you consider funny doesn't really address that topic whatsoever.

you have a point to be fair, don't know how it changed to comedians.

And if you read through the thread again you'll see that I and others have made more generalised posts too. Posts that do muse on the topic at hand. In fact the second of the thread does that. But you go nuts with your selective reading!
