HP Pavilion dv2000; Beeping Noise and blank screen

    Hi, I have a problem with a HP Pavilion dv2000.. The laptop is about 4 yrs old now but in good shape otherwise.. The problem is that instead of turning on as per normal it makes 3 loud beeps and the screen remains as if the laptop is turned off... the blue lights turn on and it sounds as if it's turned on, but it isn't... Hope this description is not too confusing!! Help much appreciated!!

    Your graphics chip is fryed this means new motherboard or new laptop id go for a new laptop and sell your broken one on adverts.ie .

    Thanks, what do i need to do to access the data on the laptop and to save it onto an external hard drive or something?

    You could try something like THIS - Take out the hard drive from the laptop and insert it into the enclosure.

    Also THIS THREAD is worth reading if it is the Nvdia defect. (You may want to get it double checked by someone, preferably one of the "No fix - No fee" Repair companies.

    If your laptop is one of those affected by the Nvidia problem, then there are a couple of routes to take.
    Following the first link may pay off, depending on where you got it from, Harvey Norman have been known to reimburse some people, or replace the laptop.
    OR - You could get it repaired, depending on where/who you go to, it can be repaired for as little as €30.

    If you wanted to, you COULD EVEN TRY IT YOURSELF It's not easy, but not overly difficult either, but if it isn't the norm for you, to pick up and take apart a laptop, and start messing with copper sink, then best to get someone else to do it.

    If you just want to get data off the laptop, using the laptop you could try this - THIS IS ONLY TO BE USED AS A "QUICK FIX" AND NOT AS A REPAIR, IT IS ALL AT YOUR OWN RISK IF YOU DO THIS.

    This should only be used to get your data off your laptop, and only works sometimes.
    First MAKE SURE you have the Nvidia problem by having it double checked by a repair company - They should be able to tell you there and then.

    Once you have verified it is the Nvidia defect:

    Place the laptop on to a bed or a similar surface to bock the air vents on the underside of the laptop.
    With the power on, wait some time for it to get warm enough (Maybe even up to an hour)
    Reboot the Laptop and it should power up.

    The reason this sometimes works is it allows the Nvidia chip to come into contact with the motherboard again.

    Try plug in your laptop into a monitor from a pc just to make sure it's not just the screen

    You can take the hard drive out and install it into 2.5" USB enclosure. Any PC shop should carry them for cheap.
