I lose quality when I burn to DVD

I have used iMovie to make a short movie. It looks great viewed on the computer in fullscreen. I exported it as a HD 1080p file and it looks just as good. I also did 720p and other sizes. When I go to iDVD or any other DVD authoring program and make a DVD of it the quality is s***e.
I have tried exporting direct to iDVD and also exporting as a 1080p file (600Mb for about 3 mins) and bringing that back into iDVD.
I've also tried Wondershare DVD creator.
Both programs reduce the size to less than 300Mb even though I've selected the highest settings.
Surely there's a way to get this onto a DVD in the original quality, it's not like I'm stuck for space on the disc or anything!
    Help appreciated.

If you're trying to create a playable PAL DVD, then it won't be possible to maintain the original quality. DVD-Video is MPEG-2 with a maximum resolution of 720 × 576. Compared to 720p's 1280×720 or 1080p's 1920x1080, this will indeed look very poor.

Anything else will not be compatible.

There are some tools you can get that allow you to create a DVD with HD content on a normal DVD and play these through a Blu-Ray player.

If all you're trying to do is back up the video (rather than create a playable disc), then you can just burn the full-quality file direct to the disc instead of using a DVD creator.
