    Calling BS.
I've heard the water in the kerosene tank story before from several people, and not just in Ireland.
When you're passing off an urban legend to somebody you always say "a friend of a friend", in this case its their brothers wives fathers brother.

Its... its a cool story but its just an urban legend and not a great one at that.
The phone call, lifter the oil days apart from the same house... nope its been doing the rounds for ages.

Its happening pretty often all over. Just last week a fella i know had his 1000L tank emptied 2 days after filling it, so it it possible that they are following oil tankers and looking for handy/easy targets.
This fellas tank was at the back of his yard with a quiet road right behind, so it was pretty easy for them to target it.

As I said earlier, in some cases the delivery man tipping off big deliveries to people, probably even casing the place for security measures and weaknesses. Its way too convenient that your friends 1000l tank got emptied 2 days after filling it to the top because even if they were following them, how would they know exactly that he got a large delivery. This is most likely a part of a racket as opposed to opportunists

I'd be inclined to agree. It would be a decent side earner for delivery drivers to pass info onto the thieves. Even if they gave him 50 euro for each tip off and he did that 3 or 4 times a week.
A lot less hassle than following a delivery truck and then guessing at how much fuel was delivered and ease of access to the tank.

Building regs are more of a hinderance than anything else. Its easy to make a heating system work that way, just requires a simple valve or two.
I agree i am a plumber i know exactly what it takes , but from experience in this country a lot of people wouldnt get these simple things like this done, even though it helps save energy etc etc, but my point is theres no enforcement of regs here so a lot of people dont bother adhering to them to the detriment of the environment and waste of energy

Look, my brother told me this story and i had no reason not to believe him, i dont know his wifes uncle but i assume he does exist.
I just stuck it on here to see if anyone had any similar stories. I've never heard the water in the tank thing before, but then maybe i'm not as well traveled as you...
I have no actual proof if this happened or not but one thing i definately do know is that i'm not a liar
