Tripoli Shock: Gadaffi Minders Snatch 'Rape Victim'

A shocking scene occurred in Tripoli on Saturday when a gun was pointed at Sky News after a woman tried to tell foreign journalists about being raped and tortured by Libyan officials.

A visibly very distressed woman burst into the breakfast room of the hotel where we are staying and attempted to speak out about an ordeal at the hands of Gaddafi supporters.
As correspondents here in Tripoli under the supervision of the Libyan government, we are not allowed to move around freely.
However, it has become apparent to those in the city that there are a clutch of journalists in two hotels.
We were having breakfast in our hotel when the woman broke in and said she'd been picked up at a checkpoint in the city.

She claimed she had been held for two days, and that she had been raped and tortured.
The woman showed marks on her body which she said she had received as a result of beatings by the people who were holding her, Gaddafi supporters.
She showed marks on her legs and on her wrists, which she suggested came from handcuffs.
In a state of great distress, she said she had suffered this beating because she was from Benghazi, the city where the uprising began in the east of the country.

As journalists tried to speak to her, things got out of control and the police minders waded in, trying to physically shut her up and stop her talking.
Hers is not the voice they want heard in this country. In the commotion a gun was pointed towards the Sky News team in an attempt to stop them filming.
A team from another news organisation had their camera smashed in front of them.

After about 15 minutes the woman was dragged outside the hotel and put into a waiting car.
As I tried to get in the way, a minder put his hand over the woman's mouth to stop her talking.
She was driven away at speed and we have no idea where she was taken. Her story could not be immediately verified, but the scene provided glimpse of the atmosphere in the city.
Government officials initially said they knew nothing about this woman, although another official later added the woman's mental health would be assessed.

It was ALL caught on many cameras and was something shocking to see.
Terrible, terrible live actions of Gadaffi thugs.

This is why this man, his sons and the their low mentality scumbags need to be gone for good.
People are really living in fear, are being abused.
I don't give a rats arse about politics and whats right and wrong about outside countries.
This is about basic human rights and the wish not to be living under the jackboot of fear and oppression.

I saw that on Al Jazira and couldn't get over how brave she was. It must have taken some balls to go to a government controlled hotel full of foregin journolists and lift her clothes to show her injuries.

Hopefully with all the coverage they won't disappear her.

Under that lunatic and his sons, she would certainly would not be the first.

It was shocking to watch her being shouted at close up into her ears, to shut up, threatened, pushed around and then they tried repeatedly to physically cover her mouth with their hands with further abusing her till they hauled her into a car.

Really shocking stuff - and if they would do that with cameras there, what would they be doing when they got her back to where they dragged her off to!

Women have very little rights in most muslim countries and rape is far from un-common, It's not really because of Gadaffi this happened!

EDIT: Not to take away from the video as is it very shocking and sad seeing the lady in so much distress

Very true in too many cases - however I would add that under people of low mentality of this one man and this thugs who appear to think they can get away with anything, will continue to do so while the world stays silent and does nothing.

By steeping up in opposition, if any such thugs are deterred at all, such people/females, etc would at least stand a better chance - no matter how slight more - of seeking and getting some sort of justice.

Aye, while sometimes there might/might not be truth in the accusation, there is also sometimes good reason why the West is also sometimes right too!

Hopefully it will lend/reinforce support from the Arab countries as to getting finally rid of this one evil man - and his thugs.

That video footage certainly will be shown around the world.

Pirate maneuver?

It seems the first one to try and silence her was a woman that works at the hotel. She held a knife to her face and called her a traitor.

Hopefully she won't be harmed though. The government forces seem to have realised that it's been seen throughout the world and are saying now that they recognise it as a criminal act and are investigating it. They even said they'll take her back to the hotel once she calms down.

I doubt they will but it may protect her from the end she could otherwise meet.

Will getting rid of Gadaffi actually stop incidences like this from occuring? I don't think so. Gadaffi has to go alright but the process must not stop there. If any lessons were learned from Iraq, it is that the work really begins after the tyrannical dictator is removed from power. I hope for the sake of the woman that the Gadaffi regime is shamed into freeing the poor woman.

The sky news reporter probably doesnt care about her but sees this as a great story.

How many times has an evil person (dictator, person in power etc) been removed and only for another evil person to take his place over time?

My suspicious nature makes me thing that she will be threatened (or her family) into re-appearing (if she does) and made retract anything she has previously said.
She will then be bundled away again, probably never to be seen again just in case later she tries to speak out yet again, about intimidation methods!

Ghadaffi has done a better job running his country then any of the middle eastern/north african nations that surround Libya,

His administration is not perfect but it offers a far more secular an d fair society then any other north african or middle easter country in that region.

This is all an attempt by the US and Brits to take over the oil trade in that region,

These 'rebellions and revolutions' are all secretly controlled by US and Brit intelligence, they will put someone in his place that will answer to the US and Wests oil interests

The media which is controlled by the US/Brit and Western establishment is doing its best to smear Ghaddafi to sway world opinion against him, Im sure he's no angel but the governments of the US and Britain are far worse

Ireland knows what it is like to the be occupied and taken over by a powerful empire and to resist such occupation, we should be siding with Ghaddafi

Afterall he is the only world leader to aid Ireland when our people were being pushed out of their own country

In a way it is a great news story. The Gadaffi regime has wiped out opposition by means of summary executions - often times before a captive audience and broadcast on TV while the rest of the world worried about news items like Jordan's latest marriage problems.

It's likely the woman met a horrible fate but she did what she did precisely so that her story would be broadcast, you can't hold that against the reporters on the ground.

And having said all that - and you do/might have some valid points - does that STILL mean he should get away with what he (and his thugs) is going to his own people?
80+ people died today alone in Ajdadiya and current independent estimates out his killing spree into the thousands.

Should the rest of the world just shut-up and look the other way?
