Sceanrio....my car is in for repairs but the bill is massive so we decided to leave the car as it is until we get the cash for it. We have 4 weeks left in the insurance and we need a car badly...

Will the insurer insure a car hire for the remaining 4 weeks and cover the cost????? I know its a long shot and doubtful but i cant get thru customer services.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

You will have to check your policy to confirm but it is very unlikely they would pay for a rental car for that long a period.

Generally, insurance companies will only give you a hire car free of charge for a certain number of days, not weeks, assuming breakdown assistance and replacement car hire is included in your policy. In my case last year I had a hire car free of charge through my insurance company (not Quinn) for 3 days max while my own was off the road, anything longer and I would have to pay the dailly rate myself. This only covered the cheapest rental car available which was a Chevy Matiz. Luckily, I was able to upgrade to a Focus for just €7 a day extra, out of my own pocket which was worth it.

You really need to examin the T&C of your policy though.

The OP is not looking for the insurance company to supply a car, just to insure it.

OP, what you're looking for is known as a replacement car, not a hire car. Most main dealers keep a few cars to rent out to people who need a temporary car but will supply their own insurance, this arrangement is known as a replacement car. They will want to see your insurance cert. because as the owner of the vehicle it is their responsibility to see to it that you have insurance i.e. they will not take your word for it.

Normally they will ask you to hand the cert. to the person in the office and he or she will phone your insurance and ask them to temporarily transfer your insurance cover over to the replacement car for a defined period. Sometimes they want to see your driving licence so bring that along as well.

Phone around your area and ask for quotes for a replacement car, you'll probably get the best deal from the guys who are repairing your car, they might even give it to you for free if you're spending so much money with them. Don't expect anything as clean and tidy as a Hertz car, they are often cars that are well past their best.

If you want to use your own insurance this is probably the only route you can go unless you can borrow a car from a friend. The likes of Hertz, Avis, etc. will not accept your insurance so they would be more expensive than a replacement car.
