Congrats on the time! I found it tough enough going in spots today. Can't imagine how I'd have felt after a feed of pints last night! Fair play.

Well done - and remember, being completely wrecked afterwards means you gave it everything you could. That's a good thing!

Wow, that's a seriously great time, you must be delighted. You're putting in great training, Conn will be no problem to you.

Congrats on the great time! Would love to hit sub-23 minutes 1 year from taking up running!

I tried your run-walk strategy at the weekend. Great idea!

Thanks a million for all the messages..

@Micilin Muc - I got the run walk thing from the excellent Marathon talk podcast, and they got it from some American guy who has written a lot of books about it. It really does make sense if you are not an "excellent" runner IMHO - the longer your going to be on the course, having a few walking breaks does not make you less of a person, it gives your body a chance to catch up and relax for a few seconds :)

@Emmanu - Yea I have always been very goal orientated. I need something to look forward to, and in this sense train for. So Connemara is my first goal this year, and the Dublin Marathon is the main goal for the year - and its all about those two, with random races scattered in between. It was also the same on my path to loose weight, I had realistic short and long term weight loss goals, and allowed myself a treat when I hit them [and importantly, did not beat myself up if I missed them, just made more of an effort to hit them next time].

I entered the Clontarf Half [also called MultiMarathon?] in early July last night. I have 5 weddings and related weekends away in June, July and August - so going to start DCM training a bit early, to have a base there, so missing the odd long run on those weekends wont be an issue and I'm just using that specific race as an excuse to have to be in good shape at that point, and will treat that race as a regular training run somewhere in Dublin I have not run before :)

just over 10k in around an hour, in and around town - not killing myself at all. Legs were still a touch sore from the weekend.

My left knee was sore at the very end [it band on side], so I slowed down for the last bit and Im here with ice on it now, cant be too careful :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

My left knee was still sore yesterday morning, sore if I really pressed into it on the side of knee. A tiny bit sore going up or down stairs. Classic definition of IT Band issues.

My physio is away on vacation. So I did the sensible thing and just rested it [iced it in evenings]. I rested up most of day at work [on top of computer tower under my desk] - also rested and iced last night and went early to bed - to further rest it.

I am not exaggerating when I say Im sh1tting myself - that I have done serious damage. Serious enough to mess up my plans for next few weeks anyway.

Its not so bad today, so I had planned to go to the gym to do upper body stuff anyway. As I was there I did 15 minutes on treadmill [after huge stretching warmup] and it was perfect at slow pace, for [literally] last 2 or 3 of minutes I upped speed to see, and I could feel it a *small* bit again. As soon as I stopped, it was perfect.

Im babysitting tonight, so its resting again. Im also going to IKEA Saturday, so would not be long running until Sunday anyway. At that, the long run would be shorter and much slower than normal, due to conn being so close, so maybe 12-15k at 10 to 11 min mile pace?

I will make a call on doing a long run or not at the weekend when at the weekend?

baby sitting last night - ran home afterwards, slow 3k to 4k - no problems at all.

I think the root of the problem is that on Tuesday I was wearing my older runners - which must be worn out after 300/350 miles [and many of those miles when I was pretty heavy, so wearing them out all the more!].

Time to take a trip to Elverys or Running Works <right name?> and get me a new pair of runners, ones which will be carrying me on much of my marathon training - so better make em good 'un's

    Ahhhh thats better..

Was thinking I should be sensible and not run tonight, giving myself an extra day of rest. But could not help myself, and went out with intention of doing a few miles, to see how the knee was...

So did just over 4 miles in 40 minutes, and felt top class - really had to hold myself back from going faster and indeed staying out and running longer.

No problems at all right now, which is great. So Im now in an exceptional mood...

IKEA tomorrow morning, fun fun fun :)

9.5 Miles in around 90 minutes...

Another crazy busy Saturday, up early again and I did a couple of hours walking around IKEA, which is harder than any long run, let me tell you!!!

So with other stuff going on, I literally only had 90 minutes to run - so that fit right in with the tapering concept, it being two weeks from Connemara [EEEK!]. So I was doing just faster than 10 minute miles, and did 9.5 miles odd.

One or two tiny aches and pains in the legs, nothing serious. Im sure everyone at the tail end of a long training program is having the same issues, which is why you taper off and recharge batteries before a serious/goal run.

I was killing time over lunch and checked my St pats 5k stuff again, and low and behold I'm on the official results now. Great stuff, must have been added last week.

My real time as per my chip was 22.37 [where Garmin said 22.55], sweet Jesus that was fast. That will take some beating, good, thats the point of PB's I guess

It also makes a sub-50 min 10k a nice goal at some point of the summer somewhat realistic, which is good.

I notice I put CIVIL SERVICE A.C. [aka Phoenix Park Runners] on the entry form. I better actually join so, as I had only been to a couple of training sessions [which I really enjoyed] and have not been for a few weeks, as I have been doing long runs on Saturdays and they are doing shorter speed stuff. I will head back down after Conn..

PS: No Run yesterday, legs wrecked from IKEA and run over the weekend. Today is always my day off. So will go back out for a run tomorrow, rested and relaxed.

Great time in the 5km, just catching up now, keep up the good work and sub 50 should be no bother to you now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

10k in about an hour, up to the park, up the kyber, and home. Plan was go around race pace up to kyber, really push it up there, and go home at 10 min mile pace [or whatever]

Knee sore after about 7k  [just after I had pushed hard up the kyber!] - so slowed right down, and walked home the last k or so [Knee not as bad as last week at all, but still annoying and frustrating for it to happen so close to race].

So going to ease right back off for rest of week - loosing one or two short/slow runs is totally worth it in the name of resting that damn what ever it is

Knee not in great shape still can feel the pain in it if Im honest - Im doing R.I.C.E. [clearly not always possible to do all parts of it!] and also various ITB stretches and exercises twice a day...

But realistically participation in Conn must have a question mark over it? I dont want to make sh1te of my ITB/Knees and be out for 3 or 4 months.

Alas the earliest I will get to see my physio is Monday morning.

What is odd is that it was terrible last week, and I was able to run a couple of days later, and did 10 miles at the weekend with no bother? Then it breaks down again on Tuesday? I dont get that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,693 ✭✭✭tHE vAGGABOND

Went to gym this morning, did 30 mins on cross trainer [going quite easy], and 30 mins general weights - just as a prevention measure against going insane tbh :)

Plan on rest for weekend, no runs. May going swimming a couple of times, but no more than that.

Fingers crossed things start to get better, would be a shame to "waste" all the training.

Similar boat myself. Will cross fingers for you.

We have over a week to recover, and not much serious running left to to, given that we're tapering. So it can work out...

    Best of luck with it!

fantastic day outside and Im here sitting on my arse, feet up, watching the cricket world cup final, when I should be doing a long run in the park..

I could do side leg lifts for Ireland now. I wonder what we have to do to get that into the Olympics?

Now I understand what people mean by taper madness :)

Went for a Swim, with some relaxation time in sauna and steam room afterwards.

I did literally a few minutes of water running, as I have not done it before and just wanted to see. Besides feeling like a plonker, I can see how it would be a good idea. I may give it a lash for a longer time tomorrow?

A tiny pain in side of both knes - which normally I would be basically ignoring as your usual post hard exercise pains, but Im hyper sensitive to it now with the place Im at...

Just catching up on your log now. This is a real pain for you, after all your work and progress. I suppose until you speak to Physio on Monday just rest it and keep everything crossed? Sounds like you are being very sensible anyway.
Couple of friends doing Connemara have come down with various injuries and all resting (and fretting) on advice of physio too.
Heres hoping it is a a short-term rest until the weekend:)

Thanks a million for the kind words Maria :)

Im off soon to make mothers day dinner for the first time, so all 6's and 7's here at my place [chunky Indian style veg soup to start, roast beef and all trimmings for main]. I had never cooked more than pasta in my life before I started loosing weight last year, now as part of the weight loss process I realised I had to learn to cook if I was to eat healthy at home! Thus far I have only cooked for myself or at most one or two other people. So now I have to cook for 5 other members of my family, starter and main course. EEEEK! The nerves for this puts any pre-race nerves in the shade :)

But that being said, I may go for a short tester run in the fields near where I grew up as I am up there, as I have never run up there before. It should be a good sign if I am indeed messed up or if there is night at end of tunnel, before going to see physio in the morning? I have not run a step since Tuesday, so doing 3 miles or so will give me a good sign where Im at.

4 miles @ 10 min miles around a park near my mums before dinner..

knee's were fine until one point when I sprinted the length of a soccer pitch, and I could feel a tiny pain at the side of both knees at that point. It was not bad at all, but the fact it was there at all is a nightmare and was starting to up when I got home. Dont really think it would have lasted another 8 or 9 miles :(

fingers crossed my physio has some kind of magic spray to make things all better :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

I find fast running puts my legs under much more pressure than a slower pace. Or to put it another way, if it hurts when you do that, don't do that

It's funny. I went to the physio about 6 weeks ago as I was having a bit of jip with my knee. He treated it for about an hour and it was feeling a bit better and he got me to straighten out my leg and he kind of pressed down a bit and I was still getting pain in the area. He then pressed around in the area for about 30 seconds and told me to do the same thing again and the pain was gone. It was mad.

Although I think with most physio sessions, the pain comes back the next day but perhaps isn't as bad.

@Ray - Absolfrigginlutely! I just wanted to put it under a small bit of stress, even for 80 meters odd, to have some context. I guess from the course profile for next week, there wont be many flat out sprints :)

@G-Money - Its funny who a gigantic amount of people I know running big April races are suddenly injured! I read somewhere that a gigantic percentage of people who train for a marathon get injured in last 6 weeks...

So after meeting with my main man this morning I have a plan A and indeed a plan B for this week about how to get to the race next week in one piece and we hope to the finishing line next week in one piece! I also have reassurance about potential outcomes if things go bad in race itself.

So I will work away on "plan A", and be a good boy this week and hope it all comes together :)

A good physio really is worth his [or her!] weight in gold! [I also LOVE how my iphone keeps auto correcting physio to psychic, it knows something I dont!]

And hopefully you guys get less of the hypochondriac "end of the world is nigh" posts ;)

Doing nothing except stretching and being a good boy yesterday and today..

Will do a very easy 5k or 6k in the morning before work.

Now starting to look at weather for the weekend..

iPhone says 15 degrees and sunny on West on Sunday and Rain on Monday..

Random weather report on Ireland.Com has the 5 day forcast showing 11 degrees and cloudy on Sunday around the larger area at Maam's Cross
