Irish people should be proud to wear the Easter Lily

The British have the poppy and it's almost obligatory to wear it over there. The poppy is worn by TV presenters, politicians, and even displayed on football shirts (even though many football players in the Premier League aren't even British ).

I think that Irish people should wear the Easter Lily with pride in memory of the brave heroes who fought for the independence of this country. However, there seems to be a general reluctance on the part of Irish people to wear this symbol.

    Why is this?

Will you be wearing an Easter Lily this year?

Lillies are gay, they need to pick a more manly flower

I don't really care very much would be the main reason. I don't think about the easter rising or the battle for independence on a daily weekly or monthly basis. I also don't wear anything to commemorate anything in general terms, it's not like I'm singling out the rising to ignore.

Maybe its the fault of the organisers for not promoting it as much. In comparison to the poppy, thats sold and promoted everywhere. Dont ever remember seeing the same for the Lily. If I had known about it, I might have worn it.

The Lilly has been hijacked by sinn fein. People don't want to be associated with sinn fein and the IRA.

Still plenty of time to get an Easter Lily this year irish-stew. It's worn at Easter to commemorate the Easter Rising.

When I hear the phrase "Irish people should..." I almost feel inclined to do the exact opposite. Talk about sheep mentality.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

No and I will not be wearing any other year either.

I would be proud to wear a lilly if I knew when the money went. At least the money raised through the sale of poppies goes towards helping ex-service men and other similar actives. I have not wore a lilly in about 20 years, but AFAIK they are only sold by SF. If there was a charity in charge of selling them and the money was spent on activities that remember those who fought I would gladly wear one.

It could the be used for service men and women of the PDF, basically on the same model as they use in the UK

As in 'people' you mean you, I'd advise you to just speak on behalf of yourself and not the Irish people.

Ok, people don't wish to be associated with the provisional IRA.

People should honour both the Lily and the Poppy. Both have their negative associations but that isn't what it's about.

And the British poppy has been hijacked by ultra British nationalists like the Royal British Legion and commemorates centuries of British imperialism against millions upon millions of people across the world, including against the Irish.

It's not as if you and your fellow British nationalists are on some high moral ground there, Fred.

In the girlfriends local pub Sinn Fein lads will be on over the Easter weekend selling the lily - its a rural place tho if that makes a difference. Anyone else experience this? I'd never seen it til I started going out with her. I'm not for or against it. Just seemed strange to me.

I will be wearing one, to remember the Irish men and women who fought and died for this country in the Easter Rising, i wear one every year, i am in my mid 20's and have done so since my early teens.

I dont wear it in support of Sinn Fein, i wear it in memory of those who died nearly 100 years ago and the sacrifices they made so that all people on this island could know and have freedom.

Thread is going to be turned into a bad topic fast!

Yep, they've placed a bomb on it and are forcing it to drive into a Unionist area.

A critic of the IRA is being advised “to just speak on behalf of yourself and not the Irish people” :pac:

I will wear a daffodil for Cancer Care (in the UK anyway) a purple flower thing for the Irish transplant deely and thats about it.

Plastic flower threads never end well, still getting over the poppy thread of November last year.

That's what happens when vested interests use the forum to promote their ideals.

Same old 'keyboard warhorses' will emerge from under the slates soon enough, if the thread isn't closed.

i wear one every year in commemoration of the sacrifice people made for our freedom. Some people belittle (see 50% of the posts in thread) everything irish or in any way republican because they are afraid people like that fratton fred fella will accuse them of being a shinner or supporting the ira, its pathetic, and complete bullshít.

Its a commemoration, and something I am very proud of

The "Easter Lily" badge they sell would appear to be an arum rather than an actual Easter Lily. Clowns.
