    Hi,
I’m looking at buying this laptop: http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Toshiba_Satellite_Pro_L670-103_-_Core_i5-480_2.6-2.93_4GB_640GB_17.3_Win7P_PSK3FE-03C015EN/version.asp

I will be running Adobe CS5, and Auto-CAD, among other things like general office programs, and internet / email.
    1. What are your opinions on this laptop? Do you have any other recommendations?

2.Do you think it is suitable for my requirements? I’m looking for the fastest/ highest spec available, in roughly this price range. Although I would consider stretching a bit further if necessary. I previously owned a HP Dv6000, which died after 16 months (motherboard failure) hence I’m looking for reliability.

3.What are laptops direct like to deal with? They appear to be the most competitive priced for this computer.

All help / recommendations are much appreciated.

oh - just noticed that it's sterling vs euro - very little in it though. some bad stories on laptops direct. saveonlaptops usually very good. if you search on that site there are some great deals on cashback on that laptop - think that you can get this from Ire.

for example you can get this for £480 sterling.

same laptop except for i3 vs i5. with the dedicated graphics on both you wouldn't notice much difference at all... yet save €200

    Thanks Glasso,

Yup its the euro price on laptops direct. Although that laptop looks to be sold out now! So I'm going to look at that other site you recommended.

Also I'm looking to get the highest spec laptop in that price range - would the i5 not be better than the i3 processor ?
I'd don't mind paying a bit more for a better spec, which would hopefully work faster and last longer.
    But I'm open to suggestion.

yes it would be faster but being honest not in a very noticeable way for day-to-day use excepting very cpu-intensive tasks (games, mega-sized spreadsheets, encoding video files).

I bought the L670-14p after Christmas for £609 including delivery. Received the rebate for £100 last week, so it only cost me €610 :)
Toshiba Satellite Pro L670-14P, Intel® Core™ i5-430M Dual Core Processor, 17.3" HD+ Screen, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD Rewriter, Dedicated ATI 5650 Graphics

Can't fault it, although it did require a bios update!

I'd avoid laptopsdirect and go with the L670-14m from saveonlaptops that glasso linked you.

its an ok laptop but i would personally go for either HP or Sony Vaio both are really good brands and are very reliable from what i have heard. My cousin got a HP laptop and he has had no problems with it. when i am buying a laptop i look for good ram, hard drive, processor and graphics

Toshiba is a top-tier brand up there with Sony and Lenovo and generally superior to HP.

Yeah, I had a 'very good' HP laptop (dv6000), which died all of a sudden on me, and left me high and dry. I heard subsequently it was a very common problem with HP laptops.
SO I'd rather avoid HP at all costs, after the hassle the last one caused me.

Tragedy, thanks for the recommendation. Just one question - what does a BIOS update involve? How did you know that it required the update?

I'm buying the laptop through work, so I can get it at ex VAT price. Work have also agreed to contribute towards the cost, hence I want to get the most 'bang for my buck'.

You download a small (>10meg) .exe, double click it, it updates bios, you restart laptop and hey presto :)

My brothers developed an issue where the input 'stuttered' every half second or so, a quick google showed this was a common problem on recent Satellite Pro's and that a bios update was needed.

Bios updated, problem fixed immediately, no bother other than that :)

Was your delivery address in Ireland?

Yes. Rebate is for £100 or €110, I said £100 on thread as it was easier than mixing a purchasing price in sterling with a rebate price in euros.
