Absolutely none of them have the charm and likeability of Lucy on the UK show:

Lucy on the UK show is lovely, thats true, but i think it has more to do with the way the irish show is done moreso than anything.

There are plenty of charming and likeable girls on the irish show, like the little one that had the microphone headset on her last week, but on the UK show paddy mcguinness goes to all the girls for a chat, whereas ray fooley (unintentional typo but rather apt!) only concentrates on one or two girls, so we really dont get to see much of the others personalities.

Also on the irish show the girls aren't as forward as the girls on the english show, with the most obvious exception being Olwyn.

The scripted questions and answers lines after the third round on the irish show are terrible too, well, they sound scripted anyway as it's fairly obvious sometimes that the girl is uncomfortable/cringing on the inside and it feels like she's just "delivering" the line instead of just answering naturally!

I saw a couple of minutes of the UK show initially and laughed it off as utter dreck.

I enjoy Ray Foley's radio show so said I'd tune in to the Irish version.. and I ended up quite enjoying it.

But since I've seen a few episodes of the UK show and it really is head and shoulders above the Irish version.

Paddy McGuinness is more off-the-cuff than Ray and very funny (but Paddy is a well established comedian). Ray tries his best, but some of those turgid lines he has to delivery like "those dishes aren't gonna wash themselves" and "those cakes aren't gonna bake themselves".

Also, the women on the UK show seem instantly more likeable (and some of them are incredibly witty.. it could be scripted however) than the Irish one.

I think thats it, the english one feels far less restrained and dull (the wizard guy on last week, or the guy with the vivienne westwood outfit a couple of weeks back, oh, the drag queen guy- tv f**king GOLD!! i can't find a youtube clip but you get the idea here- here), whereas the irish one, well i noticed as someone said on another thread there about irish shows in general, well, its done so, so cheap!

i mean, on the english one they send them on foreign holidays, on the irish one they go out to a converted green room called "shifters", that's just pure demoralising for the couple in question, i mean did the budget not even stretch to a proper dinner date or a night out on the tiles in dublin?

it all feels a bit like all the contestants (including the guys!) just dont want to be there, except for (yes, its her again, lol) Olwyn, who seems like she'd do anything just for giggles! :D

i had mentally blocked out ray foleys cut to break comments, thanks for that Basq! :(;)

It's worth noting that the entire Irish series was shot back-to-back over four days. I'm not sure how the English version is shot, but it does explain Ray's increasing difficulty at coming up with anything funny.

that explains a LOT actually!

As for Ray's increasing difficulty in coming up with anything funny, i would put forward the theory that he's just NOT funny. while im at it i would point out that its easy to see why he's so successful on the radio, he has the face for it! :p

The girls on the UK are too witty for it not to be scripted and edited heavily.

And I find the women on this show hideous, by the way. I hate their sort.

Strong statement, especially after seeing 2 series of this show, that had around 80+ contestants participating, who are made up from a varied selection of Irish women from every corner of the country.

You're hopelessly maligned and biased on this subject, self-admittedly, so I can't take anything you post on this thread in any way seriously.

The kind of people who would agree to appear on a show like this would never constitute a true cross-section. But you keep on believing that. ;)

And the contestants are just playing the game. But don't let that stop you projecting your pathological and bitter dislike of Irish women on to a fluffy game-show. You're seeing to see exactly what you want from this show and draw your own erroneous conclusions and nothing is going stop you.

^^^ I think calling that an over reaction would be an understatement. You're the one who came out with "And I find the women on this show hideous, by the way. I hate their sort", not me

I just find it hypocritical they way females posters try to defend, yet slate these contestants in equal measure. Talk about sitting on the fence! You can criticise me all you want but at least I know where I stand.

Finally, you obviously have some deep rooted personal issues and are trying to push your own personal agenda on here, so we'll just agree to disagree on this matter.

Did you type that with a straight face? You, who admits to having deep-rooted, obdurate views on Irish women? Seriously? You, who projects these views onto a game-show? Really? You, who from what I can see from past threads and this one, very much tries to push his own personal agenda, shoehorning it into discussions? So, yes, you do have a standpoint, a blinkered, biased, highly embittered one. Well done.

Saying these contestants don't come from a cross-section isn't sitting on the fence. Most people wouldn't dream of appearing on a show like this. So, it's in no way a cross-section, just like a show like Come Dine With Me, might have people from different backgrounds featuring but they all have a crucial attention-seeking facet to their personalities that set them apart.

    Poor Craythur, Raekwon..

Take your bickering to PM please!

Don't want to see any more of that on thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

No worries Basq, if she wants to add to the 23 PM's that she has already sent me then she is more then welcome.

Btw has this show been given a green light for a third series or will it end with series 2? If they do have a third series then maybe a change in host, date location (no more Shifters) and format would spices things up alittle. I don't think that the second series was a patch on the first.

im lost now, that just went over my head, even after reading it three times! care to dumb it down a small bit for me? :o

i agree with you on the fact though that it is only a fluffy game show, so there's no need to take it so seriously and take it to a level where i have to engage my brain to understand your post.

its a thread about a light hearted game show, can we all not just keep it that way? :o

Yeah noticed that too, but anyone who mentions that seem to get their eyes scratched out

Btw you mentioned the Australian version earlier, do you know of a website where I could watch/download that version of the show? I'd say it would be on par or even better then the UK version.

your question led me to wikipedia:

where i nearly keeled over laughing at the name of the presenter of the Flanders version (bottom of pic!):

    steady on ladies! :D

Haha! What an ironic name for the presenter of the show!

I'd really like to see other versions of this show and noticed that there is a Danish version called Dagens Mand which I'd say is would be visually very impressive if you know what I mean.

Most of the people on that thread are Irish though. So how is it an outside view? Did you even read the thread?

Irish girls are fine. They're harsher than other nationalities I've experienced but also much easier to get along with when you get past that shield.

Incidentally, Irish men also tend to be much more cynical and likely to take the piss.

That's who we are: a nation full of messers and piss-takers. And the rest of the world loves us for it.

If you don't 'get' that, or if you approach the dating scene from an insecure perspective with your heart on your sleeve, you'll get ripped apart and think women are bitches or men are arseholes. That's not the case at all.

We're also a nation who suffers from massively low confidence and self-loating though, so we're our own worst critics.

This show (and equally the reactions to it) has been great for examining Irish attitudes to dating, if nothing else. Single lads should be taking notes and single gals should see aspects of themselves they mightn't like in the girls on the show and work on getting rid of them.

(Btw, I'm on this Friday. Check it out </cheapplug>)

Women need to get better at approaching men, this is true.

I have done it in the past (in London - so abroad, people definitely act more open on holidays) and was rejected, but I guess that shouldn't be a deterrent, men get rejected all the time!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,635 ✭✭✭xsiborg

Women need to get better at approaching men, this is true.

in my experience i've seen that women have no problems approaching men, but i feel i must point out that these were men they were attracted to!

i dont see any reason why a woman should feel "obliged" to entertain some yob or even just a guy that she isnt attracted to. i have observed this many times when im out, especially in the club, where some guys i've observed take the opportunity to almost zone in on a girl and expect her to fall over him, almost to the point where the girl feels intimidated because she's too polite to tell the guy to piss off.

for the guys who think that irish girls are "up themselves", think about how you react when approached by a girl and you arent attracted to her, or as has happened to me many times before- if you were approached by another guy! you are perfectly within your rights to not have to entertain them, so you shouldn't be so put out when a girl turns you down. it just means she isnt attracted you, or you're not her taste, or simply she isnt in the mood to entertain you.

it happens to us all, regardless of gender or nationality.

    now, back on topic:

A few weeks ago if anyone mentioned anything negative about the girls on the show they would receive an infraction and their posts would be deleted. Add to that the contestants themselves signing up exclusively to venomously defend themselves and their actions on the show. Finally the female posters on here who are ready to jump on anyone that makes any sort of negative comment about the contestants on this show.

fair dues caseyann, i got as far as reading to page two on that link the first time, before i concluded that it was more of the same nonsense, then i read that you had read all SIXTEEN pages, so i tried again. it got tiresome after page four! :o

That link that was posted wasn't a very good example to be fair, it might as well have been a link to one of the long list of "Irish Women vs Foreign Women" threads here on boards.

I thought that his was an interesting article though.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭Poor Craythur

Of course, we wimminfolk find lots of foreign men attractive. The best-looking dude in my last job was Polish.

But I don't think the fact that there are fewer Irish girl/foreign dude relationships can be as simple as that they don't find us attractive. For me, the main worry would be what are the attitudes to women in the man's home country. Equality-wise, we don't have it too bad here in Ireland at all, and I really wouldn't want to take a step down from that. With a language barrier, it would be harder maybe to figure out what his true views on women are. Does that make sense?

This isn't such an issue for men.

I love good ol' Irish cynicism, on men AND women. :o

I'm drawn to the world-weary in general! :pac:
