Does an alarm work as a good deterrent or does it do the opposite and advetise to criminals that there is something worth protecting in the house ?

Maybe years ago when alarms weren't common place but these days most houses are alarmed. In my expierience most houses that are burgled have no alarm at all or have a old rusty bell box on the wall.

Having an alarm is a deterrent, as Fred has said it is more likely the house without the alarm is mostly targeted. From putting in alarms most people will only get one installed after a they have being broken into.
