March 17th 2012 - St Patricks Day and a Saturday

    Hi All,

    we were thinking of getting married on St Patricks Day next year simply because its a Saturday and it means that the following Monday would also be a bank holiday. I have heard that there may be a problem with getting married in a Catholic Church on this day so I tried to call our local Priest but to no avail. Can anyone offer advice?

    When you say 'to no avail' do you mean that you couldn't get through to the priest? Or that he said no?

    Oooops Im sorry, I meant that there was no answer and I have left a couple of voicemails now to get back to me.

    Ah ha. Well I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question, but all I can do is suggest you try contacting another priest in your area or your OH's area who may be able to tell you if it is theoretically possible. Oh and also, church-going relatives might have a contact for you either. I imagine though, that even if it was possible in theory, it might then be up to your local priest whether he will do it or not.

    We are both from the same Parish but unfortunately only one of us would have a family member who is religious, we will follow it up though and thanks for replying

    We are getting married this St. Patricks Day.
    When we looked into having a Civil Ceremony we realised we couldn't as no civil servant will work on a public holiday! I really didn't think we could have a church wedding but when we talked to the priest and church, there was no problem having it on the day. Seemingly it was the only day you could get married during Lent years ago.

    Anyway, everything is all sorted and only 2 weeks to go! Definitly go for it as all our friends think it's a great day for a wedding :)

    I'd say it'd be ok. The celebratory mass would be on in the morning, and since any wedding I've ever been to has been afternoon.... Sure isn't every day a religious festival of some sort anyway? :P
