Advise on best way to check second hand car before buying

hi op, did you organise this? im just wondering how you went about it - im travelling from dublin to mayo to see a car but need it to be inspected as im clueless about the mechanics. did you ring the garage to say you were coming then bring the car there with the owner? or how would you do it?
