We had this just after Christmas. It's either big feckin mice or it's rats. We put the cat up there, she spent two days sleeping on the insulation with rodents throwing parties all round her. We then put the dog up and she chased something for a bit and then cracked the plaster in the livingroom because she's a big lump of a setter. We put up a trap and it disappeared, obviously dragged back to the lair for some rodent S&M games. Finally we got some kickass poison and haven't heard a thing since.
    Nuke the fúckers.

    Ok, time to do something.

Diagnore the problem pronto by doing one of the following:
    a) Research what rat-poo & mouse-poo looks like, & go up & check for it.
    b) Get some rat traps, nail them to big lumps of wood so they can't drag them off, bait with meat (securely wired to the traps) & wait. Check them every day.
    c) Get rentokil. They will I think check out the house for free - but charge you big money for a poison programme. Maybe Rentokil's your best option given you're scared to go up there.

If you do have rats they are getting in either a) from broken sewer pipes, b) up a climbing plant or sth into the attic or c) under/thru the walls. Check these thoroughly in reverse order until you find the entry point.

If you've rats you will need to find the entry point (which may well be in your semi-d neighbour's) and block it very thoroughly. Bear in mind that they can chew thru wood, plastic, stone, etc. Any rats nesting inside will die and depending where they die the house may smell awful but this is a good sign...

Deal with it asap before the nest grows. Use rubber gloves up there & also wash thoroughly afterwards. You don't want Weil's disease.

    Good luck.

For the past I have been hearing what sounds like someone walking around and scraping up there.. When I pop my head up there is nothing there. This is starting to get freaky, the wife is afraid to use the bathroom as there is a trap door in there.. Any ideas?

Had similar experience a couple of years ago & I'm afraid to say... but.... (it was a rat!)... incredible the noise it made.....

Its the hot water / heating pipes heating up or cooling down and pulling through the ceiling joists.

Im going with the baddy from REC, get a crucifix

Surely OP would have used hotwater/heating before, so if that was the noise, he would have heard it before.

If you're too much of a pussy to go back up there then get the professionals in and pay a pretty penny. Whatever you do don't ignore the problem or it WILL multiply, especially if the problem is rats.

Are you a man or a mouse OP

Those rats need to be learned a lesson

Right I went up. A bit of insulation is missing in one of the corners, not sure if that could be rat related.. I got the creeps up there, came down fairly lively, I didn't see a rat. I plan to tell the wife that is pipes for now, she is more freaked out than I am, she wants us all to sleep with her in the living room tonight.

The rats will be able to ride in the attic in peace now, with no noise from the bedroom below.

We had a rat in our attic a few years back, little git was running up and down the length of the house keeping me awake at night, if you have a rat, dont set poison up there, if it dies in the wall cavity you will pay the price for a few weeks as it decays, smell is awful. We set poison to get the rat in our attic (my dad thought they dont smell as bad when they poisoned, he was wrong!!) but lucky enough it died on the fibre glass so we found it no bother.
