I would love to make bean bags for kids, but just thought of black smoke (silent killer) in case of fire puts me off. Im not over protective, but would like to reduce possible risks instead of bringing them home. But i LOVE bean bags. Anyone used something else instead of polystyrene balls?

'Burning polystyrene causes a dense black smoke (King, 1975) which impairs visibility and may hinder rescue work.. The health effects of smoke particles from polystyrene are not known to the detail while in a comparative study they were assessed to be less harmful than smoke from wood, cork, leather or rubber'

I think you may be overstating the particular problem with polystyrene.
