    is that even a word?

Yeah, I'm wondering what Fine Gael actually means? Do they have an English translation the way FF call themselves Soldiers of Destiny?

    Ah.
Fine Gael – The United Ireland Party, more commonly known as Fine Gael (, meaning Family of the Irish or Tribe of the Irish,) is the second largest political party in Ireland in terms of parliamentary seat numbers, the largest in terms of support according to all recent opinion polls

Just to reiterate, its the 'Fine' of Fine Gael that I am curious about.

As I have already mentioned in post#1, the 'Fine' is being pronounced by some Irish politicians as 'fine' as in (its a fine day), and surely this is just plane wrong?

Its correctly pronounced 'Finna Gael' as far as I know.

Fine: - Finn (as in person from Finland) -eh

    Gael: - Gwael

it's amazing that the clowns giving out about the FG Irish policy can't pronounce the name of the party - which is similar to Gaeilge - the language they claim they love

    Depends on the dialect.

I say Finn-eh Gwayl. Some say "Finn-eh Gayl"

    But it is never "Feena".

Since so few people in this thread, in Ireland generally and in the party itself are willing or able to pronounce Fine Gael appropriately*, and since FG wants to abolish compulsory Irish in schools, perhaps a good start would be to change the name of the party to something more manageable in English.

    Suggestions please.

*There are accepted regional variations. Click here and type in "Fine Gael" to hear a synthesised Gaoth Dobhair (Donegal) pronunciation.
