Friday Night Lights alum Kevin Rankin has been tapped for the potentially recurring role of Patrick Jane's brother-in-law, Danny Ruskin, on The Mentalist, a CBS rep confirms.
As we first reported, Rankin's character is a charismatic con man who uses his charm and bravado to mask his anxieties.
"He's a hustler, a con artist, a ladies' man — a cunning ne'er-do-well," creator Bruno Heller told Entertainment Weekly, which first reported the casting. "Through his sister, he has an emotional hook in Jane that he's not afraid to tug at when it serves his nefarious purposes."
Ruskin also blames Jane (Simon Baker) for his sister's death. But he will have to rely on Jane to help him when he is suspected of murder.
Rankin will appear in Season 3's second episode.
Eric Winter has joined CBS crime drama The Mentalist in a recurring role.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the actor will play Craig O'Laughlin, a former football player turned FBI agent.
The character will serve as a new love interest for Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti).

The third season of The Mentalist begins on CBS on September 23

Anyone else think that one of those new characters will be Red John?

    http://www.tvfanatic.com/2010/08/malcolm-mcdowell-to-reprise-role-on-the-mentalist/

Malcolm McDowell will return to The Mentalist this fall.
The veteran actor is set to reprise the role of Britt Stiles, the leader of the Visualize Self-Realization Center who first showed up on the episode "Red All Over."
"He's a charming, charismatic, deadly character - but he's wonderful because he is so smooth. He is like Teflon and whenever he's attacked he just smiles and deflects everything," McDowell said to TV Guide Magazine.

Now he could be Red John

I hope Red John is someone will have meet before

    http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/02/22/morena-baccarin-mentalist-v/

Morena Baccarin will take a break from plotting the downfall of humanity on ABC’s V to take a guest-starring role on an upcoming episode of CBS’ The Mentalist, EW has learned exclusively.
Baccarin will play Erica Flynn, described as an “attractive and sexy woman who seems as warm-hearted, sincere, and intelligent as she is lovely.” Baccarin’s character runs a matchmaking business, and may have some dark secrets. Expect attractive-person sparks to fly between Erica and Simon Baker’s Patrick Jane when the episode airs in early April.

In the two-hour finale on the 19th of May
Red John’s CBI mole is revealed, and Patrick Jane finally meets Red John

In next month's TV awards, that finale should be up there as one of the best. Very clever, a few twists, but it's a pity it took 3 full seasons and a small handful of relevant episodes to get there. The final scene was superb and the explanation of the episode's title (Strawberries & Cream) was really chilling stuff.

    Wow.....

    Wow:eek:

What a finale! Epic to the core it was. I must say
I suspected Van Pelt's bf since that moment where he didn't bother to cover her when she was pinned in a shoot out.
That said the show loves throwing you so many red herrings that it can be hard to distinguish at times. But what I love more is that every episode contains visuals clues that sometimes even Jane doesn't spot. It's a very nice setup. Anyways, folk the million dollar question.

    [S3 Finale Spoiler]
Was that really the Red John he shot? Or was it just another Crony who was told to describe the smells because RJ knew Jane all too well?

(Wish Mr Heller wrote all the episodes tbh.)

The Mentalist is probably the only formulaic "baddy of the week" TV show I watch, but I found the ending a little disappointing.

Red John seems to have serious power over people, the ability to get others to slaughter police teams, to corrupt federal agents and make assassins commit suicide in the blink of an eye rather than be caught. There has been no attempt to explain that at all so far, nor even has the question even been suggested in the main characters minds, which left me watching then ending with a little disbelief.

Still it's a fun show, and less focussed now on the nonsense of Jane hypnotising everyone and anyone to solve the case.

Was that the real Red John, on another board it suggested that Jane is really Red John

    I really hope that
that was Red John that Jane killed and that the next seasons are going to be finding out how he had those effects on people, why he killed the people he did and who else he had under his thumb. Too many shows milk this sort of thing far beyond its sell by date, I hope that these writers actually break the habit of a life time, leave the big bad guy dead and run with the plot of dealing with the aftermath of killing Red John (which could be equally as or more interesting than, the finding Red John plot).

Unfortunately they did leave an opening for that not being Red John (the guy offered the details of Janes' families killings, rather than Jane himself asking for something specific, so the real Red John could have coached the imposter on what to say), but, as I said above, I hope they dont.
Jane really being Red John could be interesting, although they would need to explain some other things first (like why he helped Hightower).

Yeah it would be frickin awesome if Jane was RJ. The argument for it isn't that bad either. Split personality disorder, he killed his own family and has no recollection of it, but RJ knows Jane is Red John.:D

No need for spoiler tags, since its all speculation anyway.

The thing is, Bradley Whitford looks a little bit like Patrick. It would be incredible (but hard to pull off believably) if it turns out that there was no body at the mall (Patrick was arrested for firing a gun in a public area). An interesting development next season would be if RJ 'haunted' Patrick in some way (a face in the crowd type of thing). Very difficult to pull off properly without tipping off viewers that Patrick was RJ all along...

Anyway I don't think it's the end of the story - I'd put money on a red smiley face popping up somewhere in the first few episodes of season 4.

    Tiger, Tiger.

A part of the William Blake Poem that Red John told Jane in the Season 2 Finale.

Finally got to watch this Season and just watched the double finale episodes. I really enjoyed it. RJ always had a bit of a weakness where Patrick was concerned and he let his guard down so it's a plausible ending.

Now, I'm liking (and hating at the same time!) the idea of Patrick actually being RJ. Wouldn't that be the ultimate twist, but I think if people are speculating that much they probably won't go that way.

    I love Simon Baker, he's come a long way from H&A !

Sometimes I do want them to get together and then other times I like how they spark off each other. It's a hard call.

I think they will eventually get together after another 2 or 3 seasons when fans start demanding it.

Does anyone think Rigsby and Van Pelt will get back together in the next season?
