Different tyre sizes?

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I can't seem to find an answer. I've got a road bike that has 700x23 tyres, and I'm wondering if it'll take something a bit wider. Will most wheels accommodate a range of tyres, and should it be written on the rims?

The wheels will not be the issue- frame and brake clearance will be. Almost all road bikes will go to 25c while SOME will go to 28c. If frame clearance is not an issue I have used as wide as 35c (622-37) on racing rims (Open Pro) without any issues (this is out of spec but I have not had problems other than it being a bit difficult to seat the tyre compared to a wider rim.)

Even going to 25 is quite a worthwhile difference from 23, more so than 2mm sounds.

If you tell us exactly what bike you've got someone might know off-hand what sort of tyre clearance it has.
