It's gas, I've often seen yanks panning for gold there!

Did any of them actually find any? I've seen evidence of gold in quartz from there which was miniscule and would take a lot of rock pounding to extract the tiny ammounts.

€300m euros worth of gold just asking to be mined...Can somebody explain to me why Mayo CC decided against the mining? I would imagine that a lot of the people who were originally against it would have had a change of heart now that the recession is in full swing.

The question isn't how much the gold is worth in the ground but how much it'll cost to get it out of there. €300m of gold is worthless when it costs €300m to mine it.

Maybe it could make Croagh Patrick a bit lower and easier to climb.

Exactly, level it to the ground. Most of the gold artefacts in Ireland has been Gold taken from this mound, as before the mountain got covered in peat it was easy for the people them days to collect.
Even of it cost 300million to mine 300millions worth of Gold, think of how many jobs it would generate in an area where there is mass emigration. The only problem is that is an area that the people have no mining experience so would have to employ people from a good mining background to do all the work. The locals could then be employed making breakfast rolls, and supplying other goods and services.
    Everyone is a winner here.

Mayo will be swamped with people from Cavan.

    Improving two counties at once.

I believe the ratio is 2/3rds of it's worth is usually written off against the extraction process, which is why gold remains valuable today. With all our technology it is no easier to find and extract today than it was in the dark ages. As already stated, it's worth more to leave it as it is than to sacrifice a part of our culture and a tourist hot spot for a pile of rubble and potential 1/3.

Let's give the contact to mine Croagh Patrick gold to foreign national for 1/3 of the amount!

There, I fixed the title according to what the government would probably do.

Could and potentially, might not, bit late to find out when we have one seriously scarred mountain in a scenic area thats drawing in the tourist dollars that someone in the 80's was talking out their a**e.

With the value of gold per oz today it seems daft and illogical not to send the diggers over on Monday.

They are only offer an educated guess as to the volume of gold therein.
Most likely substantially greater than 300 million .

It is probably a more sustainable resource to leave it as it is. Thousand climb it every year and even the ones from Cavan must leave a bit of money in the area.

Normally I would say yes, but not there and not for gold. Gold mining is the dirtiest form of mining you have to shift the most dirt to get the ore then you use chemicals like cianoid and mercury in vast quantities.

I was all for mining the uranium in Donegal but the greens said no.

If anyone has a freepost envelope big enough, we could just send the whole mountain to cash4gold and let them do all the hard work. If we arent happy with the price they offer, we can just ask for the gold back. They're hardly likely to put it back in the mountain before they send it.

Just a point I came across this thread. There's a point everyone is missing here and of course it driven by media just to sell a storey. The place they're talking about is 25km from croagh Patrick. Similar to saying Naas is in Dublin city centre. Its a nice area but similar to the rest of Mayo (sorry mayo people for next line) but a load of rock and bog. It's not an area of conservation nor is it an area of anything worthy their than a nice view.

An old saying comes to mind, 'ya can't ate view'.

It suits the greens and the envoairmentalists of course to associate with a religious place of pilgrimage. Sells more papers and gets more airtime I guess. But people should look at facts and data and not be subjective. Otherwise well all be burning crosses and this country can slowly slip into the abyss.

Anyway only my point of view

I say we mine the damn thing, lets see how many of those holy joes are willing to walk up it barefoot when there's a danger that their leg's will be blown off.
