Am on my summer hols from college & heard about working in the Gaeltacht for six weeks during the summer from a friend of a friend. I can't seem to find out anything about it though! Anyone know if this is right or what you need to do to get a job? Thanks!

You mean in an Irish college?

Well, most courses start in a weeks time, beginning of june. They'll already be filled.

You'd have to have a CV, interest in Irish and have very good spoken Irish. There's several colleges around the country, I'm sure you can google them.

If you want to learn Irish the Gaeltacht is indeed the place to go but if you can't already speak much Irish, maybe look for a job doing something in a hotel, or a factory. Remember if you are working in a shop etc. meeting native speakers daily, you will need a certain standard... so work up to that this summer, and next summer go back again and build on it.

You could look into becoming a cinnera for a college. Your Irish needs to be reasonable from what I understand before you're considered.

    I think it's spelt "cinnire";).

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly does a cinnire do? I've only been in the Gaeltacht as part of a third level course, so I'm not too sure of what secondary school courses usually involve. Am I right in saying that they stay in the houses with the scoláirí and help organise the céilithe and eachtraí spóirt? Is there much more to the job?

No harm in asking, pretty much in the one's i was at they run the céilí's, sports and fill in for teachers if they are missing they also make sure all the students are not sneaking out at night, run debates, and general crowd controll on the beaches and make sure that everyone is speaking irish, plus whatever else needs doing in general

I would love to work in the Gaelteacht for a month or two.

But job opportunities in a hotel or bars seem hard to get.

You apply directly to the Irish College, some have forms on their websites

Most Gaelteachts will pick them from their past pupils.

As far as I know, they're not paid - you pay to be a Cinnire (possibly spelt wrong!), but you pay a much lower rate than students. That's the way it was done in the Gaelteacht I went to anyways.

The one I went to cuntoirs were still in school so they paid full fees and got 350 back. Cinnires and Ard Cinnires got to go for free, cinnires didnt get paid but ard cinnires got 800

Ha, I was there! 4 times as a student, 3 as an Ardchinnire. Awesome Irish college. The pay isn't what it used to be though, as far as I know.
